Spider in My Bathtub
Mars Argo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the tiles sting like ice beneath my feet
My dress is slipping past my knees
And a memory of you is all I need
There's a spider in my bathtub
She looks at me
And she's crawling to the ceiling
For the telephone to ring
And I'm relatively lonely here
And I feel a little warm
And I wonder if you'll take me there
Can you take me there?
When I think about your touch I feel complete-ly insane
When I close my eyes my heart begins to race
And I think about your lips and how they taste
There's a spider in my bathtub
She looks at me
And she's crawling to the ceiling
And I'm waiting patiently
For the telephone to ring
And I'm relatively lonely here
And I feel a little warm
And I wonder if you'll take me there
Can you take me there?
When I think about your touch I feel complete-ly insane
For the telephone to ring
And I'm relatively lonely here
And I feel a little warm
And I wonder if you'll take me there
(You're the only one who ever touched me)
For the telephone to ring
And I'm relatively lonely here
And I feel a little warm
And I wonder if you'll take me
(You're the only one who ever touched me)
The opening lines of "Spider in My Bathtub" describe a dreamlike state as the singer is awakened by butterflies, which is a metaphor for the fluttery feeling in her stomach caused by thinking about a past lover. Despite feeling the chill of the bathroom floor, she is still filled with warmth and memories of her former relationship.
The singer then turns her attention to a spider in her bathtub, which becomes a symbol of her own feelings. Just like the spider that crawls on the ceiling, the singer's thoughts crawl around her mind, patiently waiting for a phone call from her ex-lover. The repetition of the phrase "relatively lonely" emphasizes her longing for this person and her reluctance to move on.
As the chorus repeats, the singer continues to think about her ex-lover's touch, which makes her feel "completely insane." This line suggests that the intensity of her attraction to this person is overwhelming and that she might not be thinking rationally when it comes to them.
In conclusion, "Spider in My Bathtub" is a poignant exploration of the nostalgia and longing that can arise after a relationship ends. The lyrics use simple symbols, such as butterflies and a spider, to conjure complex emotions, and the repetition of the chorus drives home the singer's sense of hopefulness and desperation.

So low key I think the song is about something awful that she doesn't want to acknowledge. Throughout the song Mars sings about the spider a couple times but it's the same lines and it's cut off abruptly, kind of like it's something she doesn't want to see and instead seems to distract herself with thoughts of someone else so she doesn't have to
