Technology Is a Dead Bird
Mars Argo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just let me love, let me be
here on the floor.
Flying eastward to the shore,
knowing that the stars wont last in the sky.
I took you to a prison cell,
you were afraid and I could tell
and on a train we met a friend,
who showed us that we should pretend

(I need to be myself again, I know precisely when it is time to be the actor. It is amusing when everything is confusing. Let us be in on the joke the world is afraid to admit or ashamed to confess, or alternatively, eager to expose. How is it that I am all of the above? There's got to be more than denial and trust. Empty bottles are starting to feel less fun, and would deceive us is deceiving.)

Technology is a dead bird in your hands
technology is a dead bird in your hands

we could live in a tree
this isn't any time or place to be
were is my liberty?
this isn't any time or place to be
buried under a tree
this isn't any time or place to
where is my liberty?
this isn't any time or place to

(everyone of us is in our wonder years, wishing we were one year younger. I, I need to get over myself. I'm going to end up on top of a mountain one of these days, if I make it long enough. Sometimes I just want to drift away into outer space.)

we could live in a tree
this isn't any time or place to be
where is my liberty?
this isn't any time or place to be
buried under a tree
this isn't any time or place to

where is my liberty?
this isn't any time or place to

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Technology Is a Dead Bird by Mars Argo feature a yearning for freedom and escape from society's entrapments. The lines "Just let me love, let me be here on the floor" express a desire for simplicity and individuality, while the reference to the stars not lasting in the sky suggests a recognition that life is fleeting. The line "Technology is a dead bird in your hands" is a powerful metaphor that suggests that the very things meant to give us power and control, such as technology, have become lifeless and limiting. The desire to "live in a tree" and the repeated question "where is my liberty?" further highlight this sense of being stifled.

The second verse contains a reflection on the confusion and amusement of life, with the singer acknowledging that they need to find their true self again. The line "Empty bottles are starting to feel less fun" suggests a disillusionment with hedonism and excess, while the final line "and would deceive us is deceiving" hints at a sense of betrayal by society and the institutions meant to protect us. The chorus is repeated twice more with variations, emphasizing the importance of the singer's message.

The overall message of the song is one of rebellion against societal norms and a desire for freedom, both from the constraints of technology and the expectations of others. The lyrics are poetic and thought-provoking, inviting the listener to consider their own relationship to the world around them.

I need to be myself again and know precisely when it is time to be the actor.  It is amusing when everything is confusing.  Better to be in on the joke the world is afraid to admit (or ashamed to confess [or, alternatively, eager to expose]).  How is it that I am all of the above?  There’s got to be more than denial and drugs. Empty bottles are starting to feel less fun and the dizziness is deceiving.

I think it's about an addiction to technology, mostly the Internet. This is just my personal interpretation, I don't claim it's 100% right.
"Just let me love, let me be/ Here on the floor/ Flying eastward toward the shore/ Knowing that the stars won't last in the sky" <--- This could perhaps show the stubbornness and idealization of the man. Being on the floor could be a symbol of defeat, yet he still thinks there's still hope left in the future.

"I took you to a prison cell/ You were afraid and I could tell/ Then on a train we met a friend/ Who showed us that we should pretend" <--- I suppose this refers to the fact that everyone jumps on the "bandwagon" of the social media. You create an account, or even your own persona on a social media just because your friends do as well. We're basically turning into slaves to the Internet.

"I need to be myself again/ I know precisely when it is time to be the actor/ It is amusing when everything is confusing/ Let us be in on the joke the world is afraid to admit/ Or ashamed to confess/ Or, alternatively/ Eager to expose" <--- This is exactly what I mentioned in the previous explanation. This person created a persona, an Internet self. Maybe she's too vulnerable to be herself so she feels that she has to change a few things about herself.

"How is it that I'm all of the above?/ There's got to be more than denial and drugs/ Empty bottles are starting to feel less fun/ And would deceive us is deceiving" <--- I believe this could refer to her annoyance with her flaws by asking that rhetorical question. This is the beginning of an addiction.

"Technology is a dead bird in your hands/ Technology is a dead bird in your hands" <--- A bird represents freedom or free-will, so this represents that the Internet has got people addicted.

"We could live in a dream (This isn't any time or place to be)/ Where is my liberty? (This isn't any time or place to be)/ Buried under a tree (This isn't any time or place to...)/ Where is my liberty?/ (This isn't any time or place to be)" <--- This is perhaps a second person speaking to the addicted female? He's dreaming of the future as he realised that his freedom was taken away. Though, his "liberty is buried under a tree" which could possibly mark that the tree's part of nature, not technology so in order to get his free-will back he has to get rid of the technology.

"Every one of us is in our wonder years/ Wishing we were just one year younger/ I, I need to get over myself/ I'm going to end up on top of the mountain one of these days/ If I make it long enough/ Sometimes I just want to drift away into outer space" <--- People don't want to grow old. I think this part signifies a suicide because the mountain is usually a place where people want to take their own life since nature's calm. Outer space could therefore be heaven. Does she want to suicide because of her addiction to her fun life? She's mentioned the alcohol bottles and drugs before, so maybe?

One of my favourite quotes “let us join in the joke the world is afraid to admit, or alternatively eager to expose”

@raiden-mei

@alonzo943

I DONT GET IT EXPLAIN

@vonzo300

@@alonzo943 I believe that lines talking about technology and how it's failed us or made us obsolete. Thanks to technology were emotionally stunted and separated., and since technology is getting smarter that means we're be owing second class. Sooner or later we'll be dead and technology will be here . We've literally birthed the thing that will destroy us.

Idk thihgn that's my interpretation

@SeanMotley

The chromaticism in the intro is absolutely genius. You don't hear things like that in music much, and that's a real shame. Masterfully written.

@mercurialmagictrees

Sean Motley huh interesting, can you explain that?

@Xhappybara

Reminds me a lot of blackbird, the beginning anyways lol

@bopshi

@@Xhappybarareminds me of Because & Blackbird so much! They picked up where Rilo Kiley (Jenny Lewis & Blake Sennett) left off ❤ I wonder which duo will be next

This album changed my life. I miss you Mars & Titanic. Thank you.

Every one of us is in our wonder years, wishing we were one year younger. I need to get over myself. I'm going to end up on top of a mountain one of these days, if I make it long enough.
