Revival
Martine Gerault Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Smoke-filled rooms with an amber glow
Whispers in your ear while you're movin' slow
Shadows dance all across the wall
Reflections are the revival

(You can't stop when the music's on your mind)
Feel so alive
The Revival

Friends you may have
Friends you may lose
Helps a broken heart to get over the blow
Time will heal
Time will tell
Good times you call them the revival

(You can't stop when the music's on your mind)
Feel so alive

Open your heart
Let the music in
Don't take no time and you'll soon begin
Close your eyes when you start to fall
Listenin' to the revival

Feel the music
Feel the music
Feel the music
Feel the music

(Fade out)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Martine Girault's song "Revival" begin in smoke-filled rooms with an amber glow. In this setting, there are whispers in your ear while you're moving slow and shadows dancing all across the wall. The reflections created in the midst of this environment are what lead to the revival. The following lines speak to the idea that when the music is on your mind, you can't stop. It makes you feel alive. Friends may come and go; they may help with a broken heart, but time will heal and tell. The good times that come from this revival cannot be ignored.

The lyrics then shift again, telling the listener to open their heart and let the music in, which will happen in no time at all. When you start to fall, you should close your eyes and listen to the revival. The repetition of "feel the music" in the final lines is a directive and an encouragement to the listener to immerse themselves in the music, allowing it to wash over them and to heal whatever is broken in them.

1992, 18 moved from London to Glasgow, met a bf that was into hip hop, went to see The Goats, Max Beasley and Martine Girault… thought I didn’t know any of them.
Anyways when Martine came on stage, Revival started pumping, and I knew it from London, it was a small club, I went right to the front of stage, and Martine (who must be bout 5ft) started belting this out. I was literally two feet away, she sang it to me! I was the only one in the place who knew this tune, and was singing back to her!
I’d ran from bad life in London, and then a massive theme tune to my previous life was right there in front of me!
One of my most special memories!
Thank
You! The beautiful and haunting Miss Girault! ❀ you will never read this! But if you do?! You’ll remember that gig, and the lost little soul singing back to you, just know it meant so much, and 30 years later it’s still as fresh in her mind and soul Xxx

Happy birthday to Martine Girault who released this now classic hypnotic Soul gem in the summer of 1992, a real grower the more you listen, written & produced by Ray Hayden

@NJbakintheday

I remember when it dropped. Recorded it on cassette off the radio (Quiet Storm, I think), but I never knew the name of it. Years later, long after I lost that tape, I heard it on one of those tv crime shows, grabbed my phone, and Shazam gave me all the info. Now, it's back in my playlist. Dope jam and good memories of college 30 years ago.
