A White Sport Coat
Marty Robbins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A white sport coat and a pink carnation
I'm all dressed up for the dance
A white sport coat and a pink carnation
I'm all alone in romance

Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go
Now you've changed your mind, it seems
Someone else will hold my dreams

A white (a white)
Sport coat (sport coat)
And a pink carnation
And in a blue, blue mood

A white
Sport coat
And a pink carnation
I'm all dressed up for the dance

A white
Sport coat
And a pink carnation
I'm all alone in romance

Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go
Now you've changed your mind it seems
Someone else will hold my dreams

A white (a white)
Sport coat (sport coat)

And a pink carnation
And in a blue, blue mood

Overall Meaning

In Marty Robbins's iconic song "A White Sport Coat," the singer speaks about his loneliness and heartbreak in a way that connects with many listeners. The song's lyrics describe the singer's appearance as he dresses up for the dance, wearing a white sport coat and a pink carnation. However, despite his best efforts to look good and be ready for the dance, the singer is all alone in romance. The lyrics touch on the theme of unrequited love, where the person the individual thought would be there for them has changed their mind and found someone else, leaving the singer feeling empty and sad.

The song's lyrics resonate with so many people because it is a universal story that many have gone through, and it speaks to the difficulties of teenage romance. Many teenagers have experienced the anxiety of dressing up, unsure of whether their date will show or if they will be alone. The lyrics' simplicity, combined with the melody's upbeat and almost delightfully playful tone, makes for a memorable and touching composition.

This is my 78 year old Dads favorite song. He is having surgery in 4 days, to (hopefully) remove the cancer growing in his body.

My brother dressed up in that white sport coat and pink carnation on stage at his high school in 1959 and played guitar and sang this song. I was six years old and screamed out his name, I was so proud. We were very poor, but my brother looked like a million bucks.

Hello 👋 Tarquin. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I’m Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl

@The50Fordman

I'll be 75 next month and can still remember the record hops where they played this song. Those were great times and will never be forgotten.

I am 67, remember this as a kid! My parents always had music in my life!
