Dancing in the Street
Marvin & Tammi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like the morning sun is rising
Will you rise with rise with me?
Like the morning sun is rising
Will you rise with rise with me
When that last train is leaving
Would you stay here with me?
Oh lonesome station
Oh dancing in the rain
Oh we'll be waiting
And I hope that we won't wait in vain
Oh
And the rain keeps falling on my bay
But we don't care we don't care if we get wet tonight
Will be dancing on dancing in the rain
we don't care if people think that we are all insane
Keep on dancing
Oh lonesome station
Oh dancing in the rain
Oh we'll be waiting
And I hope that we won't wait in vain.
Oh
And the rain keeps falling on a bay
Like the mighty rivers rolling
Won't you roll with me?
Like the rain keeps falling will you dance with me?
I wanna love you baby
Like the wind caresses the tree
Keep on dancing
Oh Lonesome station
Oh dancing in the rain
Oh we'll be waiting
And I know that we won't wait in vain
Oh lonesome station
Oh dancing in the rain
Oh I'll be waiting
And I know that we won't wait in vain
Oh I'll be waiting

And I know that we won't wait in vain
Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Marvin & Tammi's song "Dancing in the Street" evoke a sense of joy, love, and togetherness amidst the backdrop of nature's elements. The imagery of the morning sun rising symbolizes hope and new beginnings, and the repeated question of "Will you rise with rise with me?" suggests a desire for companionship and unity in facing life's challenges together. The mention of the last train leaving and the lonesome station conveys a sense of longing and the fear of being left behind, but the idea of dancing in the rain reflects a willingness to embrace spontaneity and find happiness in the present moment.

The defiance of the rain represents a carefree attitude towards obstacles and a determination to continue dancing, despite external judgments or difficulties. The repeated refrain of "we don't care if people think that we are all insane" reinforces the theme of living in the moment and celebrating love and connection without regard for societal norms. The image of dancing in the rain becomes a metaphor for being unafraid to express love and joy openly, even in the face of adversity.

The comparison of love to the wind caressing the tree suggests a tender and gentle affection that is nurturing and comforting. The lyrics convey a sense of commitment and devotion, as well as a willingness to weather life's storms and uncertainties together. The idea of waiting in vain transforms into a hopeful assurance that the love shared will endure and overcome any challenges that come their way. The repeated vow of not waiting in vain emphasizes the strength and resilience of the bond between the two lovers.

In conclusion, "Dancing in the Street" is a song that celebrates love, resilience, and the power of connection amidst life's trials and tribulations. The imagery of dancing in the rain and waiting at the lonesome station conveys a sense of perseverance, hope, and a shared belief in the enduring nature of love. Through its evocative lyrics and emotional depth, the song serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty and strength found in the bonds we share with those we love.

They were literally singing for our civil rights. ❤️

@debcrockett366

I think they were singing about freedom in America & fun in the Summertime..NO POLITICS!

@danf321

There is someone to politically charge every subject.

@lexluger3490

Lol, it's literally what they were singing about. The song was a euphemism for civil rights rallies happening at the time. 😅 Almost 60 years later and most people are still clueless. America treated black Americans like shit for a very long time, face it, it did happened. Want to fix it? Then fix it. It's not political, it's factual.

@cressapellom4205

@@debcrockett366uh no. It was about civil rights. A simple Google search will tell you that.

@ericafair9983

Now, we can literally let that go because whispers we's free now. 😮
