Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.
Hello There Angel
Marvin Gaye Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And all I hope and pray, I'll make her my girl
So, if I have wings of gold, I'll fly to you, my love
Yes, I would
and all my way to you I'll catch a star from above
Straight away I'll fly to cloud number nine
Said my baby was feeling fine
Hello there, angel, are you feeling fine today?
I happen to be in the neighborhood, thought I'd fly by your way, to say
Angel love, my darling angel, can you come out to play?
Come on angel, please, I love you
Now right around the corner there is an angel
????????????????
Yes, she would!
The beauty of your love shines trough and trough
And all, all without you
I know my world will come to an end
But I feel you float beside me
With each day, a new dawn begins
Hello there, angel, are you feeling fine today?
I happen to be in the neighborhood, thought I'd fly by your way, to say
Angel love, my darling angel, can you come out to play?
Come on angel, please
Oh ?????????????
Hello angel, yes darling, I want to take you home
Marvin Gaye's song "Hello There Angel" seems to be a love song in which he sings about an angel that he hopes to make his girlfriend. The opening lines of the song "Right around the corner there is an angel, and all I hope and pray, I'll make her my girl" sets the tone for the entire song. The lyrics indicate that he will go any distance to be with this angel, even if it means flying to her with wings of gold and catching a star from above. This image of flying to be with someone shows just how powerful this love is.
As the song progresses, he sings about how the beauty of their love will shine through and through, and how he feels her presence even when she's not physically there. The lyrics "But I feel you float beside me, with each day, a new dawn begins" suggests that even when he can't physically be with her, her presence is so strong that it feels as though she is right beside him.
Towards the end of the song, he pleads with the angel to come out and play with him, which further highlights the playful nature of the relationship he is hoping to have with her. Overall, the song is a beautiful metaphor for the power of love and the lengths people will go to be with the person they love.
