Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.

Always and forever I'll love just you
Just promise me darling your love in return
Make this fire in my soul forever burn
Forever my darling our love will be true
Always and forever I'll love just you
Just promise me darling your love in return
My heart's at your command, dear
To keep love and to hold
Making you happy is my desire
Keeping you is my goal
And I'll forever love you
For the rest of my days
I'll never part from you
And your loving ways
No I'll never part from you
And your loving ways
And I'll never part from you
And your loving ways
Yes, forever my darling
I won't love nobody but you
Give me love in return
The lyrics of Marvin Gaye's song "Pledging My Love" are an expression of true love and devotion. From the very first line, "Forever my darling our love will be true," the singer promises eternal love to his beloved. He reiterates this point throughout the song, emphasizing that his love will last as long as he lives, and that he will remain committed to his partner forever, "Always and forever I'll love just you." The lyrics are a beautiful example of how love can endure through thick and thin, and how the bond between two people can remain unbreakable.
The singer emphasizes the importance of reciprocity in the relationship: he wants his partner to promise that she will love him in return. He asks for her commitment to keep the fire in his soul burning forever. The lyrics also express the singer's desire to make his partner happy and keep her satisfied, "My heart's at your command, dear, to keep love and to hold, making you happy is my desire, keeping you is my goal." The song ends with a powerful affirmation that he won't love anyone else but his partner, "Yes, forever my darling, I won't love nobody but you, give me love in return."
Overall, these lyrics are a testament to the power of love and the beauty of a committed relationship. They showcase the strength of two people who are willing to give their all to each other and remain together, regardless of the obstacles that they might face.
