Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.
The Lord's Prayer
Marvin Gaye Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
which art in Heaven
hallowed would be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
in earth as it is in Heaven
give us this day
& forgive us our debts
as we forgive our debtors
& lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil
for thine is the kingdom,
& the power
& the glory
forever
Amen
Marvin Gaye's version of The Lord's Prayer is a soulful rendition of the classic prayer that has been recited in churches and homes all around the world. The song begins with the familiar opening lines, "Our Father, which art in Heaven, hallowed would be thy name", which serves as an acknowledgement of the holiness of God. This is followed by the request for God's will to be done on earth just as it is in heaven, a line that is often interpreted as a plea for the coming of the Kingdom of God.
The next part of the song deals with our most basic needs as human beings, with the request for daily bread being a metaphor for sustenance and nourishment. The line "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors" is a plea for God to forgive our sins just as we forgive those who have wronged us. The final lines of the prayer, "and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" are a reminder of the dangers and temptations that we face in our daily lives, and a plea for God's protection and guidance.
Overall, Marvin Gaye's version of The Lord's Prayer is a moving and powerful rendition of a timeless classic. His soulful voice and passionate delivery add a depth of emotion and meaning to the prayer, making it a truly unforgettable musical experience.

St. Augustine said that when we sing in praise of the Lord, we are praying twice. How can the Lord not be pleased with this?!
LAFITZ10
the folly of men to compare ... St Augustine also said the lie of dumbing down God's Divine Providence to a single guardian angel instead of the Legion Of Angels God Himself Tells us He Places In Charge over us.....stick to THE Word= Jesus. Jesus Doesn't Tell lies. GodBless
