Que Sera
Mary Hopkins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty, will I be rich
Here's what she said to me.
Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
What will be, will be.
When I was young, I fell in love
I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows, day after day
Here's what my sweetheart said.
Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.
Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome, will I be rich
I tell them tenderly.
Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.
The lyrics to Mary Hopkin's Que Sera Sera are a poignant reflection on the uncertain and unpredictable nature of life. The song's narrative is structured around three distinct stages of life - childhood, youthful romance, and parenthood. Each stage represents a different set of questions and concerns about the future. The refrain "Que Sera, Sera" is a philosophical response that acknowledges the unknowable nature of the future, urging acceptance and optimism in the face of uncertainty.
The first verse focuses on the innocence of childhood and the simple yet profound questions that children often ask about their future. The second verse transitions into the wide-eyed eagerness of young love and the dreams that are shared with a partner. The final verse brings the song full circle, with the singer now in the position of a parent who must provide wisdom and guidance to children who are asking the same questions that they once did.

Daybreak brought me here. Turbo's arc is so well-written. And this song fits his scene, for some reason. Beautifully done!
@andrewdevay1479
I guess this is as close as we will ever come to knowing what it would be like for the Beatles to have had a female lead singer. McCartney's production here and of course his bass playing is pure Magic
@AnnA-ge9iw
Very insightful Andrew Devay! Put into context, these were The Beatles in their creative prime, the Apple years. Paul found the perfect voice for not only Que Sera Sera, but Goodbye and Those Were the Days. It was his vision and clout that enabled this to happen, and like any great impresario, director, etc. he communicated to Mary and all involved how he envisioned it. And we can enjoy it's beauty forever 🎶💕

The entire Postcard album is very Beatles sounding, specially Mary's cover of TheHoneymoon Song. It's a good companion piece to the White Album.
