I think that you have forget that hip hop has evolved since the mid to late 90's. During this era, hip hop, and rap was more of a dance culture. Today, the lyrics are about expressing yourself; whereas listeners are not dancing; they are listening for enjoyment to lyrics that are not limited when expressing yourself with lyrics.
