The Modern were signed to a major five album deal with Mercury Records and scored a minor hit with debut single 'Jane Falls Down' in 2004. The follow up single 'Industry' was set to chart in the top twenty in February 2005 when the Official Chart Company disqualified the track due to allegations of chart fixing.
This lead to the band losing their record deal and half of their members. Undeterred, Nathan, Emma and Chi changed their name to Matinee Club and managed to score a deal with Planet Clique in the UK and Europa/Universal in mainland Europe once again for five albums.
The band's long-awaited debut 'Modern Industry' was released worldwide on iTunes in December 2007, with a physical release promised during 2008 followed by a digital single release of the fan favourite 'Sometimes'.
The album contains material that is up to four years old and previously performed by The Modern. Fans are relieved to finally have an album after following the band through its changes for a five year period.
In the US, Ninth Wave Records are released a different album entitled 'The Modern LP' containing a different track listing and some bonus remixes in January 2008.
As of June 2008, the physical album release in the UK has not surfaced and neither has the touted single 'Sometimes'. Following news that the Europa subsidiary of Universal being closed down by its parent company, together with feedback from Planet Clique that the label has no further plans to release material by Matinee Club there is no certain future for the band.
The official forum has been devoid of moderator input for several weeks prompting further speculation that the band is winding down.

Seriously I listen to Modern Industry all the time. Shame the band is a distant memory and a very faint memory unless you were in the loop. I remember Industry being a huge hit The Box back in the day. The should have been huge!

I love this band and was extremely fortunate to find their CD for a measly $3.00 at some random CD site. I can't find their CDs anywhere else and they appear to be totally defunct. What a shame. I want more from them. I would even love for them to collaborate with Lady Gaga.

It is unfortunate. but how many times does this not happen with many other bands? Sometimes we get to continuously get to hear them and sometimes they just disappear. Thanks for listening to it!

I wouldn't be able to tell you, I don't know too much about them except that they made a band name change which is maybe why they re-recorded it? I like both, but obviously I like this version better. I put this song on here because I could not find it anywhere on youtube. Its a great song!
Howl's Moving Castle
