Growing up in Perth-Andover, you learn a thing or two about the tough grind.
The family-oriented, blue-collar community is home to singer-songwriter and
guitarist Matt Andersen. While manual labour wasn't his calling, hard work is
something you pride yourself on growing up in a small-town. Having played over
200 shows in 2012, his work ethic has never been questioned.
Matt’s narrative-driven writing cuts through the soul, blending blues and folk,
encompassed in total honesty. He takes listeners on a ride with his diverse
musical styles, skilled guitar work and over-the-top showmanship. Matt's
intimate, high-energy performances have captivated audiences across the world,
from Canada, to the US, to Australia and the UK, from small clubs to festivals.
In 2011 Matt released Coal Mining Blues, produced by Colin Linden. The album
was recorded at the Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York and features
keyboardist Garth Hudson (The Band) and singer Amy Helm (Olabelle). The
songs delve into the lives of the working class and the bonds he shares with
mining communities, family and friends back home. The moving title track paints
a clear picture of the blood, sweat and tears of a backbreaking trade.
“I’m not trying to change anyone’s lives in a big way, but I love it when [listeners]
really get involved in the music,” says Matt, who won three 2012 Maple Blues
Awards and received a British Blues Award nomination, among many others.
“When people get involved, it really makes it a great night — for
everyone.” Through his exhilarating performances and connection to his
audience, Matt continues to work hard and tell the stories he was born to tell.

I've got it all spent with nothing left to pay
I hear you coming from a mile away
Oh, how I love that sound
I tossed all my wishes down the wishing well
Spoke my last words with nothing left to tell
You came along to catch me just before I fell
I get caught in the way you say it
When you call my name
I get fired up every time you say it
When you call my name
I could have a golden statue in my back yard
Have a golden coin one for every star
All these riches won't get me too far
Until I hear from you
I get caught in the way you say it
When you call my name
I get fired up every time you say it
When you call my name
Hard times are gonna fall
Trouble waits at every turn
You've got the way to keep it all
Keep it from getting to me
You keep 'em from getting to me
I could stand for days bare feet on fire
I could run for miles and I'll never tire
Yes I'd give you all your little heart desires
I get caught in the way you say it
When you call my name
I get fired up every time you say it
When you call my name
The lyrics to Matt Andersen's song "Fired Up" convey the theme of finding solace and strength in the presence and words of a loved one. The singer of the song is depicted as someone who has been tirelessly running and exerting themselves, both physically and emotionally. They feel drained and have nothing left to give, but somehow, they find hope and renewal in the sound of their loved one approaching.
The singer acknowledges that they have let go of their hopes and perhaps even given up on expressing themselves. However, just before they are about to fall, the loved one appears to catch them, becoming their saving grace. The power of the connection between the singer and their loved one is emphasized through the way the loved one says their name. It fires them up and breathes life back into their weary soul.
The song also touches on the futility of material wealth and possessions. The singer suggests that even if they had all the riches in the world, it wouldn't mean much until they hear from their loved one. The simple act of being called by their name holds more significance and fulfillment than any amount of material wealth.
The chorus repeats the sentiment of being fired up every time the loved one says their name. It's a powerful affirmation of the impact that this person has on the singer's life, providing them with motivation, energy, and a sense of purpose.
Overall, "Fired Up" is a song that celebrates the transformative power of love and the ability of a loved one to bring hope, strength, and inspiration in the midst of challenging times.
