Face to Face
Matt Holubowski Lyrics

to save what I have seen,
to pile em' up in boxes, and
preserve the memories.
If only I could capture
what I felt that fateful day,
but the pictures
anyway.
I said, if only I had evidence,
then I'd always tell the truth;
for the moments shot through lenses
will forever cling to you.
Oh, what things you miss in hiding
behind five, or six inches.
Have you captured moments, or
have they imprisoned you?
Well, I see faces through a forest
of handheld electronics,
like an island for your isolation,
but you're not lost –
you want it.
I see eyes glued to the brightness.
They move, but seem so lifeless, and
when I call them they pretend
to not have heard me say
how are you?
Would you like to have a conversation?
Face to face,
without any distractions?
Talk about the world, and
all of the people in it.
And we will say what we will mean,
there's nothing else to it.
In "Face to Face," Matt Holubowski explores the idea of capturing memories through photography and how it can both help and hinder our ability to truly experience and remember moments. He wishes he had a camera to capture what he has seen, but acknowledges that while pictures may be able to recreate the scene visually, they cannot capture the emotions felt in that moment. He also reflects on the idea that having photographic evidence can make it easier to always tell the truth, but wonders if the constant need to capture moments imprisons us in a way. Holubowski then describes the current culture of being glued to our electronic devices and how it isolates us from truly connecting with others. He longs for a genuine face to face conversation, free from distractions, where people can speak meaningfully and authentically about the world and the people in it.
