Dancing Invisible
Matthew Good Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It started out like everything else, I guess
You are what you are until suddenly you're like all the rest
I looked out over the bay at the water and the lights
I noticed we had gone to great lengths but not to great heights

The bus ride to meet you here took me half my life
And although the days were clear, we drove that night
I sat next to a woman who moved to the memory of effigy
And I tried to sing along but she couldn't hear me

We are dancing
Invisible
There are small things the day brings like cut strings
That we never pull
And after tonight when these things fade from sight
I might get you through

Maybe you know me now
But it's strange somehow
If I'm lost too
Maybe you know me now
But it's strange somehow
If I'm lost too

Lights split the window
And the wind blew me away
And the Sun scraped the distance
Like an acceptable mistake
I stared at the road signs and the possibility
They'd take me away from you

Its funny, but in this place
The only thing that you can hear
Are those far distant echoes
That blow through only to disappear

When the rain drops
And the bus stops
And the coast is clear
And I feel you're near
I will break it again
I will break it again
I will break it again

We are dancing
Invisible
There are small things the day brings like cut strings
That we never pull
And after tonight when these things fade from sight
I might get you through

Maybe you know me now
But it's strange somehow
If I'm lost too
Maybe you know me now
But it's strange somehow
If I'm lost too

It all ends up like everything else, I guess
You are what you are, you do what you do, and you get what you get
Somewhere short of regret
I looked out over the bay at the water and the lights
And I noticed that we had gone to great lengths but not to great heights

And only the crier cries at the break of dawn
I stood boxing my shadow, thinking how to get along
So to yourself, or another man to who you belong
When there's nothing left to fight
Is it easier to be right
When you know you're wrong

You are dancing
Invisible
There are small things the day brings like cut strings
That we never pull
And after tonight when these things fade from sight
I might get you through

Maybe you know me now
But it's strange somehow
If I'm lost too
Maybe you know me now

But it's strange somehow
If I'm lost too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Matthew Good's song Dancing Invisible is a reflective piece about the struggles of life and relationships. The song starts off describing how life is normal until suddenly you find yourself lost and struggling. The singer looks over a bay and contemplates how much effort is given to life, but how it all seems to be for nothing. He states that they've gone to great lengths, but not to great heights. It seems as though the singer is contemplating the idea of going through the motions of life and not truly living it to the fullest.

The singer then describes a journey to meet someone, which took him half his life. He sat next to a woman who moved to the memory of effigy, which could imply that she was living in the past and not present in the moment. The singer also tried to sing along with the woman but was not heard, possibly suggesting his voice is lost or unheard in life. The chorus repeats the line "We are dancing invisible" which illustrates that we go through life without anyone truly seeing us. There are small things that occur in life that we do not confront, and after the night passes those things fade away.

The song continues with the singer wondering if the person he is speaking to now knows him or if he is even lost himself. The last few stanzas of the song bring the listener back to the beginning, where the singer still looks out over the bay and notices that they have gone to great lengths but not great heights. The song ends with a question: When there's nothing left to fight, is it easier to be right when you know you're wrong?
