Katyusha
Matvei Blanter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Расцветали яблони и груши,
Поплыли туманы над рекой;

Поплыли туманы над рекой;

Выходила на берег Катюша,
На высокий берег, на крутой.

Overall Meaning

The song Katyusha tells the story of a young woman named Katyusha standing on the banks of a river, while the trees bloom and the mist flows around her. She sings a song about her beloved, a soldier who fights on the distant border, and whom she cherishes deeply, keeping his letters and memories of him close to her heart. She asks her song to follow the bright sun and bring greetings to her soldier on the frontline, urging him to remember the simple girl who sings for him and to protect their homeland.

The lyrics are powerful, as they capture the longing, love, and patriotism felt by the Russian people during World War II. The song was written in 1938 by composer Matvei Blanter and poet Mikhail Isakovsky and became an instant hit, being sung by soldiers, civilians, and even Josef Stalin himself. The song's upbeat rhythm and catchy melody capture the spirit of the war and bring hope to those who listen to it. Katyusha became a symbol of the Soviet Union's struggle against the Nazi invasion, a force of unity and inspiration for those affected by the war.

True story. IN May 1945 during the battle of Berlin the Composer Matvei Blanter alongside with 2 Soviet War Correspondent was visiting General Vasily Chuikov.....Around the same time The Germans wanted to talk to Chuikov on terms of peace (Goebbels was the Reich President at the time. Hitler's dead). Chuikov realizing his staff was not nearby dressed up the correspondents with medals and told them to be quite and let him do the talking. As for our composer Matvei Blanter. Chuikov shoved him in the closet..............
