26 June of 1956 almost 61 years now Clifford Brown passed away aged 25 in a car crash, also died in the accident young pianist Richie Powell (Bud Powell´s brother) aged 24 and Nancy, Powell´s wife aged 19. Great loss for the Jazz world. May they rest in peace. Never forgotten. Their music and spirit lives in this notes.

To think this recording was done in mid 50s is unbelievable. The rhythm is so sophisticated as is the quality in comparison to other records of that era. And these were just 24-25yr olds at their peak... Just unbelievable!

This is one of my favorite trumpet solos of all time. The tonality, the double time swing tastefully and perfectly placed, his impeccable technique and how he flourishes accent notes in a passage, how he effortlessly floats from one melodic idea to another, to how he sets up call and response when forming melodic passages. It all brings a tear to my eyes.....Clifford will live forever through his music!

What made Clifford unique was that he sang through his horn…so effortlessly that it sounded lyrical. I hove how Manhattan Transfer put his solo to Vocalese…the words and expression fit exactly.

What amazes me is that he was so young in writing this for his wife. His sound was mature beyond his years on earth; timeless, everlasting already at 25. It makes sense to almost cry over the loss of all the greatness we could have witnessed for so many years.

kzim229 yes I agree Harold Land is underrated, he and Clifford complimented each other so well . They were the bridge between Be-bop and Hard bop . Clifford Brown / Max Roach quintet were the Epitome of Jazz Excellence.

This reminds me of home in many ways. From a child being greeted by the sound of jazz and the smell of bell peppers and onions arriving home from school. Also taking my children to soccer and basketball practice. On the road with the her who is she I Love. Together we all make this masterpiece work in the spirit of jubilation. Sometimes people aren't disliking the music but that some guy completely unrelated to the musician(s) involved in the recording uploaded it and monetized it and is now making money off of something that isn't his. (That doesn't seem to be the case this time since I don't think the uploader monetized this but that's usually the case for a lot of other recordings on YouTube, it is).

in every jazz tune there is somebody saying the same you said, what is the problem if somebody didnt like this?, im transcribin harold land solo and i love it but i guess to each his own, some people just dislike this gems so others rant and get furious about it, don't fall in that trap and just enjoy it

My dad told me what a serious jazz man Clifford Brown was. While Monk and Miles, Charlie Parker were getting high after performing, they didn't get up before 1 or 2 PM. Brown, however, went straight home and went to bed. Was up by 9 AM----------practicing!!

I was very young when this brilliant man was so tragically killed. I've since read up on him. If young Musicians could do a small fraction of what he did at such a tender age ...wow! And might I add this is such a lovely way to celebrate his love for his wife by writing what has become one of my favorite classics.

Everyone goes on about Brown's solo (which is obviously amazing in itself), but I adore how Land's just bursts straight into it, it's one of the few bebop solos I could sing all of. Most underrated saxophone player there ever was.

Max Roach,one of my all time favorite drummers that also taught me so much coming up as a young drummer in the early 60's. Still to this day i can remember hear him telling about,rudiments,tempo,being the rock foundation and always working hard to improve in every aspect. THE DRUMS ALSO WALTZ ( MAX ROACH ) Should be learned by every your drummer .

That’s what I’m trying to do right now, jazz has always been so hard for me to get into, I was so scared of it being a rock head. Max Roach is on the completely otherside of the spectrum considering my main two influences being Dave Grohl and John Bonham among others. Wish me luck lol

My jazz band buddies wore this record out in the late sixties and early seventies, especially Clifford's solo from about 2:10 to 2:30. Then we'd listen to Freddie Hubbard on Maiden Voyage. (I'd go on to listen to Don Cherry on Ramblin', but that's another story.) Clifford was so good, and died so young. God damn. Thank you,Clifford, and Richie Powell too, killed at the same time in the 1956 accident.)

I've always thought that Clifford Brown had two special things: fantastic, round and beautiful tone and a uniquely melodic way of improvising.

In grad school I lived in a big house where we set up a great stereo in the huge living room and I'd put on these LPs and crank them up...lights off and just listen. That and ESP, Nefertiti, Live at Birdland, Filles de Kilimanjaro...

Heard this song long time ago on a jazz radio program r something and meant to search for the album or more other music of theirs, but just forgot about it in all the daily nonsense. I'm glad this showed up in my suggestions. I started looking up jazz musicians again as I was in the mood for it after hearing some Chet Baker yesterday. I found several that I recall hearing before but just did not have time to look for in the past.

I absolutely love these two amazing artists! I only wish Clifford could have had a much, much longer career. He had so much to share. Just imagine what could have been created! This tune has an unusual construction: A-1, A-2, Bridge and a recapitulation of A-1. Clifford Browns Second Bridge solo is brilliant with a combination of step and chromatic forward motion expressed rhythmically and in an effortlessly way.
