The Pila Song
Max Stalling Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wind was hot and the sun was hard
I was beat and my mare was tired
And the fence line I was riding stretched forever
My mind drifted off and back
To Carmella and her heart of black
And the things that she'd said to me yesterday
So when the boss sent me out checking fences
I was glad cause I knew that it meant
That I could spend some time out all alone

I wiped the sweat that stung my eyes
Looked up and I realized
That I was coming up on the south windmill
The concrete tank stood there beside
The water trough that it supplied
When the trough was full the mill could keep on pumping & pumping & pumping
So we drank deep from the shallow trough
And wetting my hair gave me the thought
That a swim in that big tank might cool me down

So I shucked my duds and hung 'em on the fence
Climbed the wires to reach the rim
Pulled myself on up and jumped right in
The water was cool down underneath
But deeper than I thought it'd be
There was no ladder and the walls were slick with moss
Sure enough I got cooled down
When I found I had no way out
And the thought of a rat in a feed bin chilled my blood

Well, at first I laughed at the fix I was in
Then my troubles all sank in
Without some help I was there to stay
I screamed and clawed to no avail
Till dignity and voice had failed
I wore my fingers down on those damned walls
I marked the time with the windmill's shade
Passing cross my mossy grave
And the cows coming to water twice a day

I always figured lightning strike
Or rattlesnake or barroom fight
Would do me in, not some Mexican rose
The fact is I was hot and dumb
Struck stupid by the sun and love
So on the one hand I guess she'd played her part
Through all that time I cussed her lots
But I cussed myself the most because
I had not looked before I leapt

Now overhead an eagle soars
And I smell rain coming from the north
I wonder if she'll even shed one tear

Just one tear over me
Just one tear over me.

Overall Meaning

The Pila Song by Max Stalling tells the story of a ranch hand's misadventure when he takes a break from checking fences to cool down in a water tank. The singer is portrayed as exhausted from riding his horse in the scorching sun, and his mind wanders back to a woman named Carmella and "the things she'd said...yesterday." The singer's mind seems preoccupied with this woman who possesses a "heart of black," leading to the suspicion that something is amiss in their relationship.

As he reaches the south windmill, the heat is too much, and he decides to take a swim. Unfortunately, the water in the desolate tank is deeper than he'd anticipated, and there is no ladder, trapping him there with no way out. The singer reflects on his foolishness and wonders if Carmella will shed a tear over his fate.

Through poignant and rich verses, Max Stalling delivers a haunting tale of the consequences of carelessness and a bad deal. It is an accurate portrayal of life on an isolated ranch, the harsh environment, and the choice we make that ultimately can have dire consequences.

If you've cowboyed in west Texas this song will hit home.

Koen H

This song really hits home and I live in western ND cause I once knew a kid that drowned in a dam after moving cows all day

trevspillman4

This is my favorite song. I have been looking for a good version of it forever. Thanks for the upload.

spacecase8888

Just a thought. Maybe there's a chance he lived, because he said there was rain coming from the north. If the top of the tank is open and can be filled with water, it could raise the water level enough for him to climb out.

Chance Obenhaus

A once in a century rain at best would raise it 10".

No You

Wade koehn no I think he’s talking about the take that provides water for the trough and he can hear the cows moving

Jopshua

The song was inspired by a man from around his home town being found dead in a cistern. So I believe already knowing the outcome, he created the song based on a fictional account of how a fella could have gotten in that predicament.

spacecase8888, I still can't wrap my mind around the whole story... Took all is clothing off so he couldn't stop the flo of the water at the bottom of the pila and then the cows are drinking it therefore kept it from the top and the walls are all covered in slime then his girl he misses he's having thoughts about.... And I'm sitting here trying to figure out why he didn't try and stick a stick in there to see how deep it was

Randy Blakstone

Excellent ballad, lord he’s a great singer/ songwriter.

Rob Keeney

It's like a musical "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" episode.
