Virginia
Mayday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You & me love we're naked like two jaybirds
Bathing just north of the nearest border town
We flew out of Georgia when the first shots were fired
Never no never to look back again

We dropped the transmission outside of Buffalo
And then set the old beater to flames
And continued our way by many train rides
As far as our saving would allow

Virginia lets get away from here
Virginia it's a sorrowful state of affairs
The whole town turned on us I swear
It's like nothing that I've ever seen
In support of a warring regime

Politics, they never were my strongest suit
Religion I left behind as a boy
Signing never came too easy love
But Virginia I fell for you in an awful way

Ain't nothing in my life hit me so naturally
Like a hammer you fell from the sky

And knocked me right out of my plans for war
I left those evil intentions behind

Overall Meaning

Mayday's song Virginia tells the story of two lovers who leave their home state of Georgia during the civil war, fleeing North as they seek refuge from the conflict. The song opens with the lyrics "You & me love we're naked like two jaybirds", which immediately sets a tone of vulnerability and closeness between the two characters. As the song progresses, we see them traveling through various means, including train rides and even burning their old car, as they make their way towards Virginia. The state is described as a place of escape, a place where they can finally be free from the conflict and the hatred that had consumed their former town.

Throughout the song, we get a sense of the deep love that these two characters share for one another, and the lengths they will go to in order to protect it. The lyrics "Politics, they never were my strongest suit/ Religion I left behind as a boy/ Signing never came too easy love/ But Virginia I fell for you in an awful way" show that they are willing to abandon their old identities and beliefs in order to find a new life together. The song ends with the character reflecting on how their love has changed them, and how they have left behind their old intentions for war and destruction.

Overall, Virginia is a powerful and romantic song about the sacrifice and bravery that love can inspire. It tells the story of two people who are willing to give up everything they know in order to be together, and who find in each other a sense of hope and freedom that they cannot find anywhere else.

Found the YOUTH FOR JUSTICE (Earth House Records) comp with Faceless and Element 33. It also has Faultline (AMAZING XXX BAND!) and lots of other good bands too (Quadiliacha!). Wonder if this is available digitally or a CD on ebay or something. I see one person has the CD for sale via discogs.com too.
