Hunger
McCrae Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been casting shadows
With my hands in the dark of nighttime
The creatures we made on
On the ceiling seeing with a flashlight

Sometimes I wonder
Whats going on with you babe
Your heat my thunder
Is crashing down into the rain
You'll never suffer
I'm like a shelter to the pain
But I feel the hunger
It's driving me insane

I been gettin tired
All late nights that you kept me up
We stay out till later
Times we had just not enough

Sometimes I wonder
Whats going on with you babe
Your heat my thunder
Is crashing down into the rain
You'll never suffer
I'm like a shelter to the pain
But I feel the hunger
It's driving me insane

Woah
I'm frozen, I'm fallin'
Woah
I'm frozen, I'm fallin'
Woah
I'm frozen, I'm fallin'
Woah
I'm frozen, I'm fallin'

Sometimes I wonder
Whats going on with you babe
Your heat my thunder
Is crashing down into the rain
You'll never suffer
I'm like a shelter to the pain
But I feel the hunger
It's driving me insane

Sometimes I wonder
Whats going on with you babe
Your heat my thunder
Is crashing down into the rain
You'll never suffer
I'm like a shelter to the pain

But I feel the hunger
It's driving me insane

Overall Meaning

In "Hunger," McCrae expresses his inner turmoil as he grapples with the love he shares with someone he cares deeply for. The song begins with the idea of casting shadows and creatures made with a flashlight on the ceiling in the dark of nighttime. This imagery is perhaps emblematic of the feelings that the two of them share; something which exists only in the dark and cannot be seen in the light of day. As the song continues, McCrae ponders the state of his relationship with his partner and whether the tide has turned against him. He muses on the intense passion they share, but also wonders about the future and the trials they might face. In all, the track is a raw and powerful examination of a relationship in flux and the yearning that comes with it.
