Picnic
McGuire Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a picnic morning without a warning
I looked at you and somehow I knew

On a day for singing
My heart went winging
A picnic grove was our rendezvous

You and I in the sunshine
We strolled the fields and farms
At the last light of evening
I held you in my arms

Now when days grow stormy
And lonely for me
I just recall picnic time and you

Now when days grow stormy

And lonely for me
I just recall picnic time and you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Picnic", by the McGuire Sisters, depict a beautiful memory of love and togetherness. The setting is a beautiful picnic morning, where the singer finds herself looking at her loved one and feeling an overwhelming sense of knowing about her feelings towards them. The day is beautiful and meant for singing, and the singer's heart is taken over with joy as they find themselves in a picnic grove, making it their rendezvous spot. The couple spends the day walking through fields and farms and as the day comes to an end, they share an intimate moment where the singer holds her loved one in her arms.

The singer confesses that when things get stormy and lonely for her in the present, she finds solace in this memory of a beautiful day filled with love and sunshine. The song speaks to the power of memories and how they can often be the one thing we hold on to when life gets rough. It also highlights the idea of finding joy and moments of love amidst the monotony of everyday life.

Great harmony. I equally love the instrumental versions of this song.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever and I think possibly the very best version of the "Picnic" theme too. I've been listening to classic tunes for years, including the "Picnic" film score and have never heard this rendition...it's AMAZING. Thank you greatly for sharing it with us!

What harmony The McGuire sisters had! What a great time in America as well. Our golden era was post Korean War until the assassination of JFK. Too bad we did nothing, or very little about racism. It’s still here.🙏🇺🇸

Gotta agree with you, the harmony is beautiful, it's a sweet wistful memory of love...

This song is so beautiful it hurts down deep. Going on family reunion picnics in the 50s and 60s Pa. Dutch area, we had the same setup of bands, games, cake walk, prize, amazing dutch food. Oh the memories of seeing my children play. Sadly one daughter has spoken to me 15years, wife divorced 27 years. But memories like this keep me alive. Thanks

I was born in 1946, in Chicago where Kim Novak was born! I've been remembering this song, which was the theme song from the movie, Picnic, with Kim Novak and William Holden as the young couple falling in love. This song is usually combined in counterpoint with Moonglow . I use it as my ringtone ! Loved the
McGuire Sisters. Their harmony was wonderful. If u watch the video from the movie dance scene, if you're a romantic you'll MELT. I just ordered it from Amazon Instant Video and I'm watching it right now. I'm a 72 y/o female who experienced that glorious romance and passion!

@Mercedy I'm slightly younger than you but I feel like such a idealistic, romantic young girl when I hear this song, it pulls at my heartstrings so 😌 I couldn't help but sway with an imaginary partner in the kitchen when I heard it but I had to stop since it hurt my arthritis too bad 😅
