His Bat Out of Hell trilogy — Bat Out of Hell (1977), Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell (1993), and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose (2006) — has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. The first album stayed on the charts for over nine years, as of 2016 still sold an estimated 200,000 copies annually, and is on the list of best-selling albums.

After the commercial success of Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and earning a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf nevertheless experienced some difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. My wife was the lead singer of a lounge band in the '80s. Several times late in the evening, my wife and myself would cover this. While she had the voice of an angel and I admit I not the best singer but when on that little stage there was no one better in the world. Unfortunately she was taken away from me in an auto accident. I watched a great documentary on Meat Loaf and he did not have it easy. He had to grind to make it then to fall and then rise again. Amazing story, great music and performance from someone who really worked extremely hard at his craft. His duo singers were also unbelievable and need a lot of credit too.

This song reminds me of a music theory seminar on classical music that I attended in college. The prof talked about how in symphonic music the composer will introduce a theme (like "Will you love me forever") and expand on it, then introduce a counter theme and expand that one (like "Let me sleep on it"), and then next blend the two musical themes into a new complex movement. Finally the symphony will bring out a synthesis of the two in the final movement (as with "Praying for the end of time"), usually harkening back to the introductory movement ("Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife") to complete the circle.

This song really is perfect in every sense of the word. Not to mention how tone perfect and precisely executed the music and background vocals were. Jim Steinman deserves to stand next to Mozart in history for this and Bat Out of Hell.

I basically grew up to Meatloaf.

My mother used to sing in the car, dance in the kitchen, and crank this song everytime she heard it. Before digital releases and digital platforms and people listened to the radio, if the song came on just before we got home, she'd sit in the car in the driveway until the song was over.

She even requested this song when she got remarried (to whom is my awesome father now).

i grew up with this stuff and it is just kinda unbelievable that it even existed. was never a big fan of meatloaf, but the work is the work and a testament to the quality of musical artistry that you saw in the 70s. say what you like about meatloaf, but the artistry shows a clear vision, the composition is brilliant, and the whole thing is absolutely original, funny, 100% committed, and like all music at that time, backed up by consummate musicianship. it's just a whole package like you got with many artists then because they were artists, as opposed to today's pop music hacks who lack any musical or compositional skill and cant even get off the toilet-training they call autotune

I saw this version of the show in Winnipeg in the summer of 1978 or 1979 at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall on Main St. My friends and I had front-row tickets and we could actually feel the perspiration flying off Meatloaf as the concert progressed. He wasn't anti-vaxxer as far we know - he was anti-quarantine, anti-mask, anti-controlling-government. The thing that folks don't seem to realize that catching Covid is 99.5% survivable. That 0.5% is due to people having serious background health issues. And Meat has some health issues - overweight and asthma to name a couple. The asthma caused him to cancel some shows a while back.
RIP - gonna miss him but we have his music to remember him.
