In the fall of 2008, four musicians came together at a Moes in Charleston, SC and decided that there would be no other option than to start creating music. The goal was to create indie pop rock music that was easy to grab a hold of, but not surfacy to the point that there would be no depth to its lyrical content. At the helm of the songwriting are front man Ricky Taylor and drummer Josh Luke who stream many of their influences from bands such as Copeland, Barcelona, and Lydia. Joining with them is guitarist Brian Jarvis and bassist Austin Campbell, who each had successful stints previously in fronting other bands. With all of the pieces now in place to begin the writing process, Meet the Sky began on its journey. Recording their first EP with producer Taylor Bray (The Dirt and The Flood, The Lovely Few) in October of 2008, the band came out of the studio with 4 songs that accurately expressed their musical desire to maintain an indie band feel, while incorporating different elements of the pop rock world into the mix. With their debut EP released February 4th of 2009, expectations are high for this group. Whether it's their catchy melody lines or their meaningful lyrics, the band's hope is to embrace the calling that has been placed on their lives and point people ultimately to the hope that lies within the songs themselves. With more studio time slated with producer Lane Johnson (Rookie of the Year, the Record Kid), the future is an exciting place to look forward to, but it's hardly the focus. Meet the Sky's desire to progress musically is constantly on the forefront as they move from a relatively unknown band into the mainstream, but as they tred toward the future, they sure don't disappoint with their current offering.
Nowadays:
Meet the Sky has added a fifth member and look to redefine themselves with a more mature sound as they draw near to their exciting new release, "Wake Up Your Heart". Nearly every song has an in your face moment, whether it be musically or through lyrical provocation, and forces questions that point to answers greater than the tangible. If you haven't heard Meet the Sky before now, "Wake Up Your Heart" is a good place to start listening.

But sometimes love is dealt the worst of all other hands
And then what will you know when all you try seems to fail
But sink your head into your hands
And hope its strength prevails
And maybe it will
Your words might be strong enough but words will fail
Just know we all fall the same
It's hard to pretend
That you're better off
That you're better off
That you're better off
You're better off alone
You can hope in what you always have
That your arms will be tight enough to keep it off the ground
But then what will you know
When love it slips through your grip
But sink your knees into the ground
And pray for it to fight and win
And maybe it will
Your arms might be strong enough but strength will fail
And maybe it can
Just know we all love and lose it's hard to consent
That you're better off
That you're better off
That you're better off
You're better off alone
And maybe it will
Your love might be just enough to no longer pretend
That you're better off
That you're better off
That you're better off
You're better off alone
In the lyrics of "Better Off" by Meet The Sky, the theme of love and its complexities are explored. The song begins with an acknowledgment of the struggles in trying to make love work, even when faced with difficult circumstances. The line "But sometimes love is dealt the worst of all other hands" sets the tone for the challenges the singer faces. Despite their efforts, they feel like they may be destined to fail, leading to a sense of despair and the need for strength to persevere.
The chorus emphasizes the idea of being "better off alone," suggesting a sense of resignation or acceptance that sometimes being on one's own may be the best option. This sentiment is repeated throughout the song, highlighting the internal conflict between holding onto love or letting go for the sake of self-preservation. The repeated refrain serves as a reminder of the struggle and the internal battle the singer is facing.
As the song progresses, there is a shift in perspective towards the acceptance of loss and the acknowledgment that everyone experiences love and heartbreak in their own way. The lines "Just know we all fall the same, It's hard to pretend" reflect a realization that vulnerability and pain are universal experiences, and it can be challenging to put on a facade of strength when dealing with matters of the heart.
The final verses of the song bring a sense of resolution, suggesting that perhaps love, strength, and hope can prevail despite the challenges. The repetition of "maybe it will" and "maybe it can" highlights a sense of uncertainty but also the possibility of overcoming obstacles. The song concludes with a sense of acceptance that one's love may be enough to no longer have to pretend to be "better off alone," indicating a glimmer of hope and a willingness to embrace love despite its uncertainties.
