Miles Apart
Mega City Four Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and I'm thinking once again,
how the way we see is
never quite the same.
I can understand sensations,
and smells of petrol stations,
but the subsequent reactions
aren't the same.
should it make me sad,
or should it make me laugh?
Miles and miles and miles and miles
and miles and miles apart.
Well I'm looking at the sun,
and I'm sure there's only one,
but the way you see things
always makes me doubt.
There is no one solution,
We continue in confusion.
Accidentally finding ourselves out.
The opening lines of the song “Miles Apart” present a metaphorical image of standing in the rain that carries its spiritual undertones. This could represent a person being vulnerable, exposed and feeling like they're constantly running. The lyrics suggest that the way we see things isn't always the same, everyone's perspective might be different, and that's not always something that can be helped. The subsequent lines talk about understanding sensations and smells of petrol stations, but the reactions after that could never be the same. This could be interpreted as the experiences people go through, in life, that may be similar, but the way everyone responds to them is different.
The song's main theme seems to be based on a relationship that is ending, or at least is moving away from each other. Nevertheless, it's quite unclear whether it's goodbye or just a paragraph, leaving the listener or the character in the song with the confusion of not knowing if the relationship is over or if they will come back together, even if just for a short while. Questions are asked in the lyrics, whether it should make me sad or make me laugh, showing how the singer is divided, unsure of how they're supposed to feel at this point. The outro of the song suggests that we're miles and miles apart and that there's no one solution. We continue in confusion, accidentally finding ourselves out. These lyrics depict a feeling of detachment and isolation, as if the character is lost, and wants to find themselves again.

Well I'm standing in the rain,
I'm currently standing in the rain
and I'm thinking once again,
I am reflecting on this situation once again
how the way we see is
How we perceive things is
never quite the same.
Always a bit different from each other's perspective
I can understand sensations,
I am able to comprehend feelings
and smells of petrol stations,
Including the scent of gasoline stations
but the subsequent reactions
However, how we react afterwards
aren't the same.
Are never the same
Is this goodbye or just a paragraph,
Am I saying goodbye or just a paragraph?
should it make me sad,
Should I feel regret?
or should it make me laugh?
Or should I find humor in it?
Miles and miles and miles and miles
Regardless, there is a significant distance
and miles and miles apart.
Between us that we must contend with
Well I'm looking at the sun,
Now I am gazing up at the sun
and I'm sure there's only one,
And I am confident there is only one sun
but the way you see things
However, the way you perceive things
always makes me doubt.
Always causes me to question my certainty
There is no one solution,
No single resolution exists
We continue in confusion.
So we persist in uncertainty and bewilderment

Brilliant band. Discovered them by accident in 1988. Was due to see The Alarm in Brixton but the gig was cancelled so didnt get the coach up to London so stayed in Bristol, went to The Bierkeller & there was this brilliant band (Mega City Four) full of energy & great songs & fell in love with them instantly

This was our soundcheck song for the harmonies in over 80 gigs with Scary Sad. The only time someone has recognized this song was in 1998, when Sportfreunde Stiller, who played later that night, ran into our soundcheck, singing the chorus together with us.

I remember supporting these guys at gigs back in my hometown in 88-89 and bought Clear Blue Sky from them on 7" with the labels on the wrong sides.
This kind of melodic power-pop was not that trendy back then; remember (if you can) that goth was not dead yet and hardcore was heavier and faster, and little did we know that grunge and Madchester were going to swamp us all anyway.
But! All these years on this stands out instead as fucking timeless and exactly why you want to avoid being trendy and should instead "have the courage to do what's best for you..." :)

Drove 60 miles through black ice to see these and The Parachute Men at Bridgewater Arts Centre with about 30 other people in the audience. Both magnificent. Miles Apart and Wear Your Jacket in one evening.
