The band was formed in 2001 under guitarist and composer Mekaal Hasan, initially starting with a collaboration with renowned percussionist Pete Lockett. The efforts received critical and public acclaim as a breakthrough style of fusion music. Mekaal decided to continue writing music along similar lines and formed a full time band which released its debut album 'Sampooran' in 2004.
Sampooran features the artistry of artists from Pakistan and abroad, with stunning performances by the UK's Pete Lockett on drums and multipercussion along with bass sensation Michael Mondesir. Pakistan's own drum legend, Gumby, makes his mark as guest artist on the opening four tracks on the record. With fellow bandmates Javed Bashir on vocals, Mohammad Ahsan Papu on flute and Sameer Ahmed on bass, The Mekaal Hasan Band is continuing to explore this exciting blend of East and West, in a series of live performances that are drawing appreciative fans in large numbers.

The lyrics to Mekaal Hasan Band's song "Ranjha" are a plea to God for understanding and empathy in the face of an emotional struggle. The repeating phrase "Raba Mairay Haal Da Mehrum Toun" roughly translates to "Oh God, you are unaware of my state" in Urdu, conveying a sense of isolation and disconnection from a higher power. The following lines describe the singer's sense of being torn between inner and outer turmoil, with the repeated phrase "Ander Toun Hai Bahir Toun Hai" suggesting a sense of being split in two. The final lines of the song, spoken by poet Hussain Bakhsh Kausar, ask for God's help in finding balance and perspective in the midst of personal struggle.
Through its poignant and powerful lyrics, "Ranjha" invites listeners to contemplate the challenge of feeling disconnected from our spiritual selves and to seek solace in a higher power. The song's message of vulnerability and authenticity resonates across cultures and can inspire us all to lean into our struggles with courage and faith.
