Fiona was featured on Reggae Gold 2008 with the Supa Dups-produced "Somebody Come Get Me". Her debut album The Bridge was released in the summer of 2009. She worked on the album with Future Cut, Vada Nobles, Stereotypes, J. Phoenix, Peter Wade and Salaam Remi. The debut single "Give It to Me Right" was released to radio stations on February 28, 2009, and peaked at #20 on Billboard's Canadian Hot 100 and #41 on the UK Singles Chart. The second single, "It Kills Me", became her breakout song on the Billboard Hot 100 where it cracked the Top 50, along with hitting #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song earned Fiona a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Her second album, The MF Life, was released through the SRC Records and Universal Republic on March 20, 2012 after several delays. The Break Down The Walls Songfacts reports Fiona told Billboard magazine that her goal with The MF Life was to give an "honest" depiction of her life and how things have changed from her debut set, The Bridge.
In 2002, Fiona was briefly involved with girl group X-Quisite. Early in her career, she would perform at nightclubs in Toronto. In 2005, Fiona traveled to Los Angeles, California, in search of a recording contract. According to Fiona, record labels "loved" the way she looked and sung, but "knew that the minute I worked with them or would have signed with them, they would have tried to change me into someone else completely different. That was something that I didn't want to do." She went on to co-write songs for recording artists Rihanna and Kardinal Offishall. Fiona also recorded the reggae song "Somebody Come Get Me" under the stage name Syren Hall, which was included in the Reggae Gold 2008 compilation album. Entrepreneur Steve Rifkind discovered and signed Fiona to SRC Records and Universal Motown in 2007. She went on to tour with Kanye West in his Glow in the Dark Tour.
I Tried

But if I follow the rules
There was no way I'd get hurt
But every time I let my guard down
I just let my heart down, ooh
I could give until you're back down
Run me dry until I tap out, ooh oh
But you still won't let me rest
Must've fallen way too deep
Now I'm drowning it's so hopeless
No one said it would be easy
Love isn't for the weak
But even in my strongest
You're the one I can't defeat, ooh oh
I tried being good but it never worked
See, I was playing with fire
When I should just let it burn
What's the use of being good?
In love when there's is no peace hey, heyy
Might as well be the bad girl
Maybe then I'd find relief o-o-o ohhhh
I tried, I tried baby, you know that I tried
I don't know why I gave you my best
Yes, I did, yes, I did i tried, I tried
I tried, I tried oh, I tried
In Melanie Fiona's song "I Tried," the lyrics express the struggle of trying to be good and follow the rules in a relationship, but constantly finding herself let down and hurt. The singer acknowledges that they have tried their best to be good and give everything they have to the other person, but it hasn't worked out. They have let their guard down and allowed themselves to be vulnerable, only to have their heart broken repeatedly.
The lyrics also convey a sense of exhaustion and hopelessness. The singer mentions their need for sleep, but the other person won't let them rest. It indicates that they might have fallen too deeply in love, and it's become overwhelming and suffocating. The singer acknowledges that love isn't easy and is for the strong, but even in their strongest moments, they can't seem to defeat or let go of this person.
The chorus highlights the frustration and confusion the singer feels. They question the purpose of trying to be good and find peace in love when it always seems to elude them. They suggest that maybe being the "bad girl" would bring some relief, implying that they might be better off embracing a different approach or mindset in their search for happiness.
