Following her dreams led her to a year gigging in England, France and Ireland. Performance highlights included the 100 Club (where artists from Jimi Hendrix to the Clash played), and playing Le Fleche D'or in the Artists Quarter in Paris. But one European winter was enough and returning home in 1999, she released her first EP "Don't Know What To Say".
With her three-year residency at Glebe's Excelsior Hotel, Melanie is credited as being at the forefront of Sydney's "Nu-Folk" movement, with intimate performances by a singer-songwriter with a classical guitar. Her second release, the "Magic Mirror" EP was produced by Garth Porter (ex-Sherbet). "Magic Mirror" consolidated her eclectic rootsy style while allowing her pop sensibilities to shine.
Melanie Horsnell's debut album "The Adventures of" has since been recorded, Melanie has toured Europe several times in the past year as well as supporting artists such as The Frames and Bernard Fanning. Her Album is available now thru MGM in Australia and RounderEurope in Europe and the UK, as well as on itunes and www.martianmusic.com.

Birds
Melanie Horsnell Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As high as me somehow
They could see all the things I've been dreaming of
These wings of mine flutter inside
They shimmy and they glide
Treaking forth crack the shell from this clockwork life
You should see what I can see
You should know what I know
Oh oh oh ladida oh, ooh oh oh
Yesterday I thought I saw the darkest clouds
The rain, the hail, the storm, the gale
Kept belting me round
But even from the darkest clouds
The sun came out
lada dadada
You should see what I can see
You should go where I can go
You should know what I know
Oh oh oh ladida oh, ooh oh oh
Yesterday I thought I saw the darkest clouds
The rain, the hail, the storm, the gale
Kept belting me round
But even from the darkest clouds
The sun came out
lada dadada
Melanie Horsnell's song "Birds" talks about the freedom and perspective that comes from having wings and being able to fly. The song starts with the singer imagining what it would be like if all the birds could fly as high as her and see all the things she's been dreaming of. This is followed by a description of the feeling she gets when she thinks of flying, where her wings flutter inside, shimmy and glide, breaking the shell from her clockwork life.
The singer then encourages the listener to see, go, and know what she does because of her unique perspective from the sky. The song ends with the reassurance that even from the darkest clouds, the sun will eventually come out, symbolizing hope and perseverance.
The lyrics of "Birds" express the idea of escapism and the freedom that comes with it. The singer longs to be able to fly away and escape from the routine and mundane aspects of life. This is made evident when she describes her wing as fluttering inside, indicating an intense desire to escape. The song is inspiring as it encourages listeners to pursue their dreams and to never give up hope, especially when they feel like everything is falling apart.
