Recess
Melanie Martinez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was too young to see the truth
In my grandma's lap, I'm drowning in her perfume
Too naive to even care
'Bout the words she whispered while she brushed out my hair

People gonna say
If you need a break, someone'll take your place
People gonna try
To tell you that you're fine with dollars in their eyes
(Just remember)

Don't let them fuck you, honey, no, oh
Don't let them try (ooh)
Don't let them hurt you, baby
Just say, "Recess, I'm tired"

Sittin' in my room, looking at all I've done
Everything I wanted has come to fruition
I should be happy but I can't get out my bed
Stressin' 'bout the voices screamin' inside my head

People gonna say
If you need a break, someone'll take your place
People gonna try
To tell you that you're fine with dollars in their eyes
(Just remember)

Don't let them fuck you, honey, no, oh
Don't let them try (ooh)
Don't let them hurt you, baby
Just say "recess," I'm tired

Where is my time?
Gone in my mind
Gone, I can't find
Euphoria
When I get upset
I think in my head
"I do as she says"

People gonna say
If you need a break, someone'll take your place
People gonna try
To tell you that you're fine with dollars in their eyes
(Just remember)

Don't let them fuck you, honey, no, oh
Don't let them try (ooh)

Don't let them hurt you, baby
Just say "recess," I'm tired

Overall Meaning

The song "Recess" by Melanie Martinez is essentially about feeling trapped and stressed, and wanting to escape from it all. The song is broken up into two distinct parts, each focusing on a different type of stress. The first part of the song talks about the stress of being young and not understanding the world around you. The singer talks about being too naive to care about what her grandmother was saying, but now realizing how the words affected her.

The second part of the song focuses on the stress of adulthood and the pressure to succeed. The singer has achieved everything she has ever wanted, but she still can't find happiness. Throughout the song, the singer is reminded that people will always try to take advantage of her or tell her what to do, but she ultimately decides to take a break and say "recess." The song urges listeners to take care of themselves and not let others take advantage of them.

Overall, "Recess" is a powerful anthem about self-care and protecting oneself from the stress of the world. Though the song is short, it packs a punch with its relatable lyrics and catchy melody.

This whole song makes me think about how I saw one specific moment in different parts of my life.

At the moment I was just a kid, I had gum tangled in my curls, I was crying, not understanding why things were good for my classmates and so bad for me (undiagnosed ADHD and Autism) wondering what did I ever do to deserve being hit and laughed at. My mom was taking the gum out with ice and a curly hair brush. Telling me to not let them mess with me, to not give them attention and just prove them that Iā€™m better than their weird childish obsession with making me suffer.

At 13 I realized that it wasnā€™t my fault, they were making fun of things I couldnā€™t change, I remembered that moment in a deja vu, I was sitting in the bathroom while my mom would help me take off all the leaves that got stuck in my hair when they threw me in a pile of leaves and dirt. Sheā€™d tell me to not let those stupid behaviors hurt me, because if Iā€™m hurt, they win. If I cry, Iā€™m giving them exactly what they wanted all along. If I hide, I make them more powerful than me. And thatā€™s not what we want, right?

At 16, now, I understand what that ā€œweā€ means. A generational trauma caused by bullying and undiagnosed ADHD. My mom was bullied her whole life. And so did my grandma. And her mom. And the story just repeated itself for ages.
I, shamefully, did the same thing to my younger cousins before I understood how this behavior can be toxic and harmful, making us force ourselves to be ā€œstronger than our bulliesā€ by not showing emotions and ignoring them and trying to convince ourselves that if we ask for help, they ā€œwinā€. Telling them that they should prove themselves better than their bullies, all while doing the stupid tradition of taking stuff out of their hairs.

I hope Iā€™m being able to reverse that and break the chain of generational traumatized ADHDs
