Jaded
Melissa McClelland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These things I say
Come spinning out of my mouth
Like they've lost their way
And there's no doubt about it
You heard me,
I shouted,
I think you'd prefered it
That whenever you come clean
I say nothing at all

So what?
You'd left
Before I had a single chance to second-guess
These bittersweet diversions
And late night excursions
Secret perversions
Well, maybe I'm naive,
'Cause I can't believe this

And now you fill my heart with doubt
You've turned me inside out
But I'm not jaded
And still, with all this overkill
And bitterness instilled
My heart's left unfulfilled
But I'm not jaded

My life
Complete
With minor twists and turns
And just a small defeat
You know you really got me

You burned me
You shocked me
You threw me
You lost me
Well, maybe I'm naive
But I'm catching on fast

And how could I have been so proud?
You've turned me inside out
But I'm not jaded
And still, with all this overkill
And bitterness instilled
My heart's left unfulfilled
But I'm not jaded

You came around
Your hands did all the talking
As you sat me down
For a bittersweet reminder
You heard me
I shouted
I'd never allow it
'Cause maybe I'm naive
But I'm not fucking stupid

And still, with all this overkill
And bitterness instilled

My heart's left unfulfilled
But I'm not jaded

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Melissa McClelland's song Jaded speak of a relationship that has gone through a lot of turmoil and emotional upheaval. The singer seems to be trying to make sense of the things that have been said and done between them, trying to understand the other person's actions and reactions. The first verse talks about how the singer's words may come out in a jumbled mess and how she regrets not being able to say the right things at the right time. The second verse talks about how the relationship has been tainted by secrets and lies, and how the singer can't help but feel somewhat gullible for having believed everything that has been said to her.

Despite the pain and heartache caused by the other person's actions, the singer refuses to become jaded. She acknowledges the bitterness that has been instilled in her but refuses to let it consume her. She knows that her heart is still unfulfilled but she's not going to give up on love. The final verse talks about how the other person comes back into her life, hoping for a second chance. She is tempted to give in but is determined to not be fooled by their charms again. The singer asserts her self-respect and refuses to be used or taken advantage of anymore.
