Ma Rainey
Memphis Minnie Lyrics

I was thinking about Ma Rainey, wonder where could Ma Rainey be
I was thinking about Ma Rainey, wonder where could Ma Rainey be
I been looking for her, even been 'n old Tennessee

She was born in Georgia, traveled all over this world
She was born in Georgia, traveled all over this world
And she's the best blues singer, peoples, I ever heard

When she made Bo Weavil Blues, I was living way down the line
When she made Bo Weavil Blues, I was living way down the line
Every time I hear that record, I just couldn't keep from crying

Hmmmm, hmmmmm
Hmmmm, hmmmmm
Hmmmm, hmmmmmmmm

People it sure look lonesome since Ma Rainey been gone
People it sure look lonesome since Ma Rainey been gone
But she left little Minnie to carry the good works on

A female talent who is under appreciated in the male dominated blues world.

Today is Lizzie "Kid" Douglas' (a.k.a Memphis Minnie's) birthday!  She was given the sobriquet (nickname) Memphis Minnie by Columbia Records.  Happy Birthday Memphis Minnie!!!

"Blues" was the tentative name bootleg tapers gave to an unreleased song Mazzy Star played live on their 2000 tour. In 2013 we finally learned its actual title, "Does Someone Have Your Baby Now", as the song was included on the new album out in 2013. I've upped a live version to YT.

@harmonicaman54 Mazzy Star covered two of MM's songs, "I'm Sailin' " & "Bake My Biscuit". Aside from their psychedelic-tinged stuff, & melancholy "dream pop", Mazzy did a bunch of great "rootsy" songs, including fine ones of their own, with guitarist David Roback playing slide acoustic, & the incomparable Hope Sandoval singing. One of my faves among such Mazzy's performances is a song simply called "Blues". -Thanks R.D.H., for the wonderful bunch of vintage songs you've uploaded to YT!

@harmonicaman54 Led Zeppelin's "When the levee breaks" was actually written and recorded by Minnie and her husband Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929 =]
