Five Little Rooms
Menomena Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Count your blessings, it's far removed
From your group of peers
From your circle
Five little rooms, one for each of my husbands
One for each of my bridegrooms,
And their prostitutes
Take a breath of the scenery, all this
Someday could be yours
Cross your heart, click your heels and get the
Hell away
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours
Hung on a pole right next to a McDonald's
In a suburban shopping mall
At half mast again
Between shootings
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
All this could be yours, someday
The lyrics of Menomena's song Five Little Rooms paint a picture of a play that takes place in a freezer. The setting is isolated from the world, and the singer reassures us that it's a blessing to be away from our group of peers and circle. The five rooms mentioned in the song represent different phases of the singer's life, as each room is dedicated to one of her husbands, bridegrooms, prostitutes, and children. The line "take a breath of the scenery, all this someday could be yours" suggests that the singer is aware of the transitory nature of her existence.
The song is a commentary on the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of life. The five rooms represent different stages of the singer's life, but they are all located in the same freezer, which emphasizes the finality of existence. The singer encourages the listener to appreciate the scenery and cross their heart, click their heels, and get the hell away, indicating that we should live life to the fullest and not waste time on things that do not matter. The line "all this could be yours, someday" is ironic, as it suggests that even in death, there is nothing to look forward to.
