Wishful Thinking
Mental Notes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You know I didn't have a choice
Where were you when I needed you
You didn't even hear my voice
And that's too bad
Forget what you had, just move on, don't look back anymore
But what you think of me
I'll never know
So I'll just tell myself
It's not that bad
Who am I trying to fool this time
It took me so long to find out
I wasn't missing all that much
Where was this feeling all my life
Hidden somewhere deep inside
And the day will come
When all the pain and sorrow
Will wash away
It's a new beginning tomorrow
So take
Take it slow
Take as long as you want while you can
And then
When it's gone
You have no one but yourself in the end
Now that I'm where I need to be
It doesn't feel quite the same
Rather go back to the misery
To make the most of what remains
The lyrics of Mental Notes's song "Wishful Thinking" touch upon themes of frustration, being let down by others, self-reflection, and the desire for change. The song begins with the line "Just chew me up and spit me out, you know I didn't have a choice." These words express a sense of powerlessness and feeling helpless in a situation that is beyond one's control. The singer seems to have been treated poorly and left to deal with the consequences alone.
The lines "Where were you when I needed you, you didn't even hear my voice" suggest a lack of support and understanding from others. This could be referring to a specific person or a broader representation of feeling unheard or dismissed in life. The disappointment in not being heard or seen by those close to them is expressed through the line "And that's too bad, forget what you had, just move on, don't look back anymore."
The lyrics then delve into introspection, as the singer contemplates what others may think of them. They mention how it seems like everyone is the same, implying a sense of disillusionment or feeling misunderstood. The line "So I'll just tell myself it's not that bad, who am I trying to fool this time" conveys a struggle to convince oneself that the situation is not as dire as it seems, while acknowledging that this may be a false reassurance.
The chorus brings a glimmer of hope, as the lyrics suggest that eventually, the pain and sorrow will fade away, creating a new beginning. The line "It's a new beginning tomorrow" alludes to the possibility of starting fresh and leaving behind the negative experiences. However, the verses that follow caution against rushing this process. The lyrics prompt the listener to take their time and make the most of the present, before it's gone. The final lines express conflicting emotions, as the singer finds themselves in a better place but longs for the familiarity of misery, perhaps questioning if it was truly worth striving for what they have now.
Overall, "Wishful Thinking" explores the complexities of disappointment, the longing for understanding, and the desire for personal growth. It reflects on the challenges faced in relationships, both with others and oneself, while also highlighting the difficulty of embracing change and finding solace in newfound happiness.
