I feel a world away from where I was before
Oh and I'm not the same
Oh, no I'm not the same now
Fell in the traps that they set for us
Kept us tired, chasing a dime, waiting on lunch
Oh, but we're not the same
Oh,'cause a lot has changed
Oh and it's not a game now
Present
Now I could never forget it
Bright light shining on quiet city
Like a lighthouse in a blackout
Why?
I don't really know, I don't really know
I don't know, no why
I still believe in gold, still believe in gold
I still wanna try
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
I believe in gold
Oh, look around, look around you now
Heart's too young for dying, caught an early train
Oh 'cause it's not the same
Oh, no it's not the same
Oh, they don't got no shame
Oh, now we're saying names
Present
Now I could never forget
Bright light shining on quiet city
Like a lighthouse in a blackout
Why?
I don't really know, I don't really know
I don't know, no why
I still believe in gold, I still believe in gold
I still wanna try
I don't really know, world as we know it went up in smoke
I still believe in gold, still believe in gold
I still believe in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
Believe in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold, in gold
I believe in gold
I believe in gold
I believe in gold
The song "God" by Mereba explores themes of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The first verse touches on the idea of transformation and self-discovery, as the singer reflects on how far she has come from her past self. The second verse speaks to the societal struggles faced by people of color, referencing the "traps" laid out by those in power that keep marginalized communities from advancing. Despite these obstacles, the singer asserts that much has changed and it is no longer a game.
The chorus of the song is a repetitive chant of "I still believe in gold", emphasizing the idea that there is value and worth in each individual, no matter their background or circumstances. The use of the metaphor of gold adds a layer of depth and richness to the theme of self-worth.
The bridge of the song offers a glimmer of hope, as the singer describes a bright light shining on a quiet city like a lighthouse in a blackout. The final chorus repeats the mantra of believing in gold, and the song ends on a note of faith and determination.
Overall, "God" is a powerful song that offers a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. Through its use of metaphors and powerful imagery, Mereba explores themes of self-discovery, societal inequality, and the enduring worth of each individual.
