Faces
Meri D. Marshall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey
Am I too late
Ive been putting this off
Ive been playing my own game

Now I
I know Jesus Christ
Hold the door open
Im coming back to life

Here I am
I am yours
I just want to see you

I don't hear you
Jump outside the rear view
I hope that when I see you
face to face
You'll say
That you really know me
I know what your heart sees
Maybe we could sing
Something more exciting

Why
I know why
I choose to play the victim
It gets me every time

You
oh you
Hit me where it hurts
You know exactly what ill do

Here I am
I am yours
I know you'll
Never leave

I don't hear you
Jump outside the rear view
I hope that when I see you
face to face
You'll say
That you really know me
I know what your heart sees
Maybe we could sing
Something more exciting

I don't hear you
Jump outside the rear view
I hope that when I see you
face to face
You'll say
That you really know me
I know what your heart sees

Maybe we could sing
Something more exciting

Overall Meaning

In Meri D. Marshall's song Faces, the lyrics explore the complexities of modern relationships struggling to balance the pressures of work and connection. The song speaks of two individuals who are unable to afford to go out on dates but are afraid to be alone. They continue to text other people but neglect to truly get to know each other. The singer is tired of falling asleep next to their phone and feeling isolated. The chorus warns about the dangers of pretending to love someone you hate for the sake of saving face. The song ends with the realization that this relationship is not sustainable and the singer feels as if they are losing their mind.

The lyrics in Faces highlight the importance of genuine connection and communication in relationships, as well as the emotional toll when those needs are not met. The song has a dream-like quality that further emphasizes the sense of isolation and disillusionment. The repetition of the refrain "Oh saving face, don't make the mistake, to love who you hate, to love who you hate now," is powerful in conveying the message that it is better to be honest with oneself and others than to pretend to be in love.
