Notes
Meric Long Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to the voices all the noises that keep ringing in your head
Staring at the wall you trip and fall and think of other things instead
Things are changing clearly in our living singularly you have grown
Step out of the past you thought at last from the unknown to the unknown

And all the while you keep on telling me that you really shouldn't get inside yourself anymore

you really shouldn't get inside yourself anymore

My guilt resides in family
I leave it there, I leave it be
I drink my way to charity
But that's not me, no that's not me
I placed that bet twelve years ago
when I was left to the unknown
I change my mind
if only I could change my mind
I'd change

Listen to this race of all the humans and their funny little ways
Lying to yourself, you're getting by
the float is passing catch the rest
Underscore the cinematic feature on the screen
which tells the story of singing corpses who are cooler in their dreams
but now they're dragging dirty laundry up and down these crooked streets

and the whole time
they keep on telling me you really shouldn't get inside yourself anymore

you really shouldn't get inside yourself anymore

My guilt resides in family
I leave it there, I leave it be
I drink my way to charity
but that's not me, no that's not me
I placed that bet twelve years ago
when I was left to the unknown
I change my mind
if only I could change my mind
I'd change

Baby you'll make this work

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Notes" by Meric Long are about the struggle to let go of the past and move on into the unknown. The first verse describes the constant noise and distractions that prevent the singer from focusing on the present moment. The second verse is about the singer's guilt and the way they cope with it by drinking and engaging in charity, which ultimately isn't true to their identity. The chorus warns against getting too caught up in one's own thoughts and inner turmoil, while the bridge expresses a desire to change one's mind and make a fresh start.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of restlessness and a desire for something more than the current state of affairs. The cinematic reference and the image of "singing corpses" suggest a need for a more meaningful existence, beyond just survival. The repeated lines "you really shouldn't get inside yourself anymore" emphasize the need to let go of self-doubt and fear and to live more fully in the present. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the refrain "baby you'll make this work," suggesting that there is potential for a better future.

I was at a Dodos concert years ago and when they were taking requests. I said "Notes!" Meric fiddled around and played the first few notes of the opening riff to find his muscle memory. After a moment he shrugged, smiled, and said "sorry!" I was like, "all good!"

@KOSAMAGAMES

i finally learned how to play by ear after listening to it like 300 times lol

@BrodcastMiself

tab to the intro can be found here: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/t/the_dodos/notes_intro_tab.htm

play the first two chords over and over for the verse, and the whole thing through for the chorus (somewhat modified, gonna have to do it by ear). There are sections that play Em, and barred G too.

The second half of the song goes [5,7] (first chord), [10,12], [9,10], [5,5]. I know this isn't traditional tabbing, but its the best I can do here. If you really try, I'm sure you can figure it out.
