Positively 4th Street
Merl Saunders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you gotta helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes

You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Merl Saunders's song Positively 4th Street express frustration and anger towards a supposed friend who has betrayed the singer. The first stanza accuses this friend of not being a true ally, emphasizing that they stood by grinning when the singer was down, and they only want to be on the side that's winning. The second stanza responds to the friend's accusations that the singer let them down and lost their faith, arguing that this is not the case and that the friend had no faith to begin with. The third stanza reveals that the singer knows the real reason the friend is talking behind their back: jealousy. The fourth stanza confronts the friend's insincere greetings in public, pointing out that they only act surprised to see the singer and don't actually mean it. The fifth stanza turns this frustration into a wish, hoping that the friend could stand in the singer's shoes and understand how it feels to be hurt and betrayed.

Overall, the lyrics showcase the singer's resentment towards a person who pretended to be their friend but ultimately revealed their true colors. The song is a classic example of Bob Dylan's songwriting, as it was originally written by him and covered by various artists, including Merl Saunders. The lyrics speak to the Universal human experience of betrayal and injustice, and the frustration that comes with it.

This show was the first date with a woman who became my wife. I am sure the fire on stage kindled the flame in her heart. RIP Jerry, Merle, Keystone, 2nd wife.

@dotcompost1

Jerry always did the best covers of Dylan's songs and this one is the best one of all; the best of the best.

@GinjaNinja77

Agreed, my favorite break up tune ever, given the weight it needed from Merl and Jerry

@jamesmclean4932

And Bob Dylan agreed with what you wrote above too. There is an Oswego N.Y. 1980 show which has a great version of this as well.

No One Played “Dylan” better than Jerry Garcia, No One that I’ve heard ..

@robertkubik1997

What makes Jerry one of a kind is that he had a way of telling the story without having to say a word. His tone, phrasing, and fill are second to none, just absolute dynamite

@stefanschleps8758

Lyrics by Robert Humter, Bob Dylan, and tradition.
Peace. 🐢

@roadkill5838

❤️ yup. This is amazing.

He does the same kind of things with his vocals.
Beautiful!

@benringenberg2394

Well put my friend. I feel the exact same about Jerry, he is the king. Put simply, he sings straight from the heart. The reason he does it so well is because it is pure truth, no audience pleasing hooks or phony lyrics, just pure emotion and living and playing in the moment.

@jeffdempsey6478

Agreed with all of the comments. He was the best at interpreting Dylan. He understood how to feel/play the story.
Ps absolutely love the pictures & photos of the video.
