Sunday Morning
Merriment Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it's Monday night and you're the only one I've seen since Sunday morning,
since Sunday morning
We may not get this right but you're the only I need to take this warning,
take this warning

Cause you and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

And we stayed up all night
Just talking through our future plans and what we wanted
And what we needed
And as much as I've tried I can't seem to make it through without you near me,
without you near me

Cause you and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

Now we've learned that we don't have to tell each other anything anymore
Cause you and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

You and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

So now I've learned not to trust you
Cause now I know love's not foolproof

Overall Meaning

The song "Sunday Morning" by Merriment talks about a failing relationship between two friends turned lovers. The singer has not seen their partner since "Sunday morning," and they are worried about the direction their relationship is headed. They both know each other so well, but something has changed, and they don't "have to tell each other anything anymore." The singer can't seem to make it through life without their partner near them. Still, they've learned that they can't trust them, and love isn't foolproof.

Through each verse of the song, there is an underlying feeling of sadness and longing. The two main characters of the song used to be the best of friends, and they used to stay up all night talking about their plans and dreams. They knew each other so well that they didn't have to say everything out loud. But now, something has changed, and it's leaving the singer feeling sad and unsure about their future.

The song conveys a bittersweet feeling as it captures the feelings of love and friendship that are often intertwined. The lyrics talk about the thin line between a friendship and a romantic relationship and how easy it is to lose what was once a beautiful and effortless connection.

I wish I could thank them for making this song and sharing their pain with us. I guess that's why I take to the comment section-- to do exactly that. I had a best friend for many, many years. Our friendship recently ended a few months ago. It's hard to go through so many years of great times and painful times with someone just for them to decide they want nothing to do with you in the end. I wasn't perfect. I was a flawed person who made mistakes... I was changing and growing in a different direction than her. We took different paths and became different people. There's a pain that sits on my heart whenever I let myself think of this rough time. She won't forgive me. I had to learn to forgive myself and learn that, although I didn't act in the best way and she detests me (along with her friends) it doesn't mean that I have to hate myself too. You just gotta pick yourself up and keep going, even if you aren't healed. Just keep going. For anyone who reads this... never underestimate the power of forgiveness. It is a love language.
