Smoke on the Water
Metalium Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
The Metalium's song Smoke on the Water was originally composed by Deep Purple in 1972 and tells the story of a real-life event that was witnessed by the band members. They were staying at Montreux, Switzerland, to record an album in a studio that was located near the Montreux Casino. The first verse of the song depicts their arrival at Montreux and their intention to record an album using a mobile studio. Later on, they witnessed the Montreux Casino fire that was started by someone in the audience who fired a flare gun in the middle of the concert of Frank Zappa and the Mothers. This incident led to the casino burning down to the ground, which is illustrated in verse two of the song.
Funky Claude who is mentioned in the second verse was a nickname given to Claude Nobs, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival. He was present during the incident and helped a lot of people escape from the burning casino. The last verse mentions how Deep Purple and other bands had to relocate to a nearby hotel after their recording plans were destroyed due to the fire. The empty hotel room became a makeshift studio, and the album was recorded with Johnny Winter as the producer. Through the lyrics of “Smoke on the Water,” Deep Purple immortalized their experience of the Montreux Casino disaster in the form of an iconic rock song.
