Amazing Grace
Mica Paris Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I am found,
Was blind, but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come,
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home
The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun
The opening lines of Mica Paris's rendition of "Amazing Grace" immediately establish that the song is a celebration of redemption through divine grace. The lyrics describe the feeling of sweet liberation after being saved from a state of being viewed as a "wretch." The singer declares that they were once lost and blind, but now they can see. This sentiment speaks to the idea that a person can go through life without direction or understanding but then find a spiritual awakening that brings them out of the darkness.
The second verse speaks to the idea that it was grace that taught the singer's heart to fear but then gave them relief in that fear. The grace referred to in this verse is seen almost as a kind of teacher, leading the singer to a greater understanding of their faith. The line "How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed" is particularly poignant because it shows the singer's awareness of the profound change that happened in their life when they first truly believed.
The final verses speak to the idea that the journey of faith is not a simple one, with the singer acknowledging that they have already been through many dangers, toils, and snares. But ultimately, they believe that grace has brought them to a safe place and will continue to lead them home. The final stanzas speak to the idea that this journey does not end with mortal life but will continue into an afterlife of joy and peace.
