My Grown Up Christmas List
Michael Bublé Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies
Well, I'm all grown-up now
Can you still help somehow?
I'm not a child, but my heart still can dream

So here's my lifelong wish
My grown-up Christmas list
Not for myself, but for a world in need

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
Every man would have a friend
That right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list

What is this illusion called the innocence of youth?
Maybe only in that blind belief can we ever find the truth

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal our hearts
Every man would have a friend
That right would always win
And love would never end

This is my grown-up Christmas list

This is my only lifelong wish
This is my grown-up Christmas list

Overall Meaning

Michael Bublé's song "Grown-Up Christmas List" is a powerful message of hope and peace, where the singer reflects on his childhood fantasies and how he wished the world to be a better place. The song starts with the singer asking if Santa, whom he addressed as a child, can still help him now, as an adult. He then goes on to say that he's not a child anymore, but still, his heart can dream of a world without the woes of war, a world where love reigns supreme.

The chorus of the song is a fervent plea for the world to be a better place. The lyrics express the wish that lives are not torn apart by war, that there is peace and healing for all hearts. The singer also wishes for every person to have a friend and for justice to always prevail. He believes that his grown-up Christmas list can help create a world where love never ends.

The song then ends with a reflection on the innocence of youth and how that belief can lead to a world of truth. The singer's only lifelong wish is for his grown-up Christmas list to come to fruition.

I feel like this is such an underrated and under hyped song. It deserves more credit than it gets.

Great song

@VancouverComposer

Especially the original 1990 version by Natalie Cole

@paulcooper8335

@@VancouverComposer Best female version, since it's the way Foster "heard" it. Buble's, best male vocal. Love 'em both!

@VancouverComposer

@@paulcooper8335 Indeed. Well of course David Foster produced this version as well so his vision was in this one as well.

@paulcooper8335

@@VancouverComposer Exactly. Try this little-known masterpiece sung by Jack Jones. It's called simply "Christmas Day." It's a Burt Bacharach-Hal David creation from "Promises Promises." David's lyrics are moving and Bacharach's melody is - well - Bacharach. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqo1NW0KU2I

Isn’t it crazy to be listening this in August? Mr. Bublé’s version of this is magical. It brought tears to my eyes. He sang it with such feeling with every word.
I’m such a Buble fan!!!! ❤️🎤🎵

@dannysimion

I gotta give it up for Buble and Christmas. They go together oh so well! He's just got that timeless voice that transcends both retro and modern appeal.

@racingfuel28

Yeah, one of my favorite classic Christmas artists is Nat King Cole, and Michael can do Christmas songs every bit as good as Nat did.

@Sylvergirlie

This is pure bliss. His voice is like a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate after you've been out all day in snow. Hands down the best singer ever. Mike you rock!
