Lazarus
Michael C. Hall Lyrics

I've got scars that can't be seen
I've got drama, can't be stolen
Everybody knows me now
Look up here, man, I'm in danger
I've got nothing left to lose
I'm so high it makes my brain whirl
Ain't that just like me
By the time I got to New York
I was living like a king
Then I used up all my money
I was looking for your ass
This way or no way
You know, I'll be free
Just like that bluebird
Now ain't that just like me
Oh I'll be free
Just like that bluebird
Oh I'll be free
Ain't that just like me
The song "Lazarus" is a haunting and introspective track that explores the concept of mortality and freedom. The first verse opens with the line, "Look up here, I'm in heaven," a clear reference to the idea that the singer has passed away and is now residing in the afterlife. However, the singer goes on to state that they have "got scars that can't be seen" and "drama, can't be stolen." These lines suggest that the singer's life was full of turmoil and pain, which has now been left behind in death.
The second verse is more opaque, with the singer proclaiming that they are "in danger" and "so high it makes my brain whirl." The lines "I've got nothing left to lose" and "Dropped my cell phone down below" suggest that the singer has nothing left to hold them back and is free to explore the unknown. The chorus, which repeats the line "ain't that just like me," reinforces this idea of the singer's uniqueness and willingness to take risks.
The final verse is perhaps the most revealing, as the singer states that they used to live "like a king" in New York City but have since run out of money and are searching for something (or someone) that they have lost. The line "This way or no way" suggests that the singer is stubborn and unwilling to compromise their values, and the final repetition of the line "Oh, I'll be free" reinforces the idea that the singer has found a new kind of liberation in death.

Background vocals? What background vocals?
@EverythingWentSideways
@JW GT yeah i would have tuned the background vocals a bit early in the mix, but the instrument and lead vocal mixing is top notch, and at the end the background vox fit perfectly

Bowie found the right man to honor him. About as honest, as humble, as prodigious a talent as he could hope to find. Thank you, MCH.
