I Dreamed a Dream
Michael Crawford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From Les Miserables

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living

So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

Overall Meaning

Michael Crawford's rendition of I Dreamed a Dream in Les Miserables is a poignant rendering of Fantine's dreams and the harsh reality that she ultimately confronts. The opening verses describe a time when everything was perfect, when men were gentle and love was blind. The songstress remembers a time when dreams were made and used, uplifted souls and not wasted. Suddenly everything goes wrong, and life turns into a nightmare, which she has to deal with.

The lyrics progress into a dream that Fantine has to live in a better world with hopes, happiness, and forgiveness for everyone. She was young and confident, and no dreams were beyond her reach. But the reality of the world complicates things further for her. Her thoughts flicker back to a love bloomed during her carefree youth. It was a time filled with immeasurable beauty, and she found life worth living. But her loved ones slipped away; the world ripped apart her soul, leaving her entrapped in a cycle of pain.

About a year ago I found out that Michael Crawford, my favorite Phantom, was the funny character from the British comedy series. I still can't get over the fact that for all these years I had been blissfully unaware. And with every song that I hear him perform my admiration grows ever more. His voice is simply magical.
