He has worked with many producers, musicians, and artists in his long career. These include Sandra Cretu, Frank Farian, Boney M, Goombay Dance Band, Peter Cornelius, Manfred "Tissy" Thiers and Mike Oldfield in his pre-Enigma days, and Jens Gad, Frank Peterson, David Fairstein, ATB, Jam & Spoon, Peter Ries, Ruth-Ann Boyle and Andru Donalds during the course of the project.
Cretu's first solo release was the single Wild River, in 1978. His first solo album was released in 1979 and was entitled Ausgewählte Goldstücke as a German release, and Moon, Light & Flowers as an English release. Cretu's second solo album, titled Legionäre, was released in 1983. This album had German lyrics and was sung by Michael. It was co-produced and supervised by Harald Steinhauer and mastered by Armand Volker. Cretu's third solo album was entitled Die Chinesische Mauer, and was released in 1985. The literal English translation of the title is "The Chinese Wall", or as it is better known, "The Great Wall of China". Like his previous album, this had German lyrics, was sung by Michael, and was co-produced by Armand Volker. This album was also released as a separate album with English lyrics and a different track listing under the name "The Invisible Man". Several of the tracks on "The Invisible Man" were edited slightly, and, therefore last for a different length than the German versions on Die Chinesische Mauer.
After Cretu's marriage to Sandra in 1988, he had an idea, following suggestions made by David Fairstein, for a musical "new age dance" project under the name, presented by Fairstein, of "Enigma". Cretu worked with Frank Peterson and David Fairstein to create their ground-breaking first single "Sadeness" which became a surprise hit. MCMXC a.D., the album, which was released in 1990, was hugely successful. It is thought to have sold about 30 million copies worldwide. One of the aims of Enigma was to present music that has never been heard before and is not being produced anywhere, which also forced Cretu to continually move in new musical directions and to stay ahead of imitators.

Waterfall
Michael Cretu Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You keep on flowin'
Waterfall
You're gonna clean it all
Waterfall
And she was cryin'
And you know what I feel inside
When she came around
And you have seen it
Like the times before
When she got down to my love
Has it been pretended
So you will lead me now
To another start
Waterfall
You keep on goin'
Waterfall
You're comin' from so far
Waterfall
I've paid the prizes
I won't lose you
My mother-nature-call
Waterfall
You keep on flowin'
Waterfall
You're fillin' up the tides
Waterfall
And she was cryin'
Cause when you soothe me
It makes the tides go by
So many times I laid beside you
Now I got a mind to
Make another start
Cause when I'll be achin' for love
Someone's about to find you
And I will feel for you
In another time
Waterfall
You change my feelin'
Waterfall
She's comin' back to town
Waterfall
She's reachin' to me
You're gonna try to save me
Every time I'll come around
Waterfall
Flowin' around me
Waterfall
The lyrics to Michael Cretu's song Waterfall describe the healing and transformative power of nature, specifically through the image of a waterfall. The repetition of the phrase "Waterfall, you keep on flowing" serves as a reminder that even when we feel stuck or stagnant in life, nature continues to move and evolve. The waterfall symbolizes a purification process, washing away the past and making way for new beginnings. The singer of the song has been hurt in love and is seeking a fresh start, and the waterfall serves as a source of comfort and hope, soothing his pain and guiding him towards a happier future.
Throughout the song, there are subtle references to the cyclical nature of life and love. The singer speaks of "another start" and "another time," suggesting that this is not his first attempt at moving on from past traumas. He also mentions how "someone's about to find" the waterfall when he's "achin' for love," hinting at the possibility of future love interests and cycles of healing and growth. The song's bridge, with the lines "Waterfall, you're gonna try to save me / Every time I'll come around," emphasizes the idea of the waterfall as a constant source of renewal and protection.
Overall, the lyrics to Waterfall encourage listeners to turn towards the natural world in times of hardship and seek solace in the power of change and growth. The song is a reminder that even when things feel stagnant or painful, there is always the potential for renewal and transformation through the healing power of nature.
