Grateful
Michael Feinstein Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got a roof over my head
I've got a warm place to sleep
Some nights I lie awake counting gifts
Instead of counting sheep

I've got a heart that can hold love
I've got a mind that can think
There may be times when I lose the light
And let my spirits sink
But I can't stay depressed
When I remeber how I'm blessed

Grateful, grateful
Truly grateful I am
Grateful, grateful
Truly blessed
And duly grateful

In a city of strangers
I've got a family of friends
No matter what rocks and brambles fill the way
I know that they will stay until the end

I feel a hand holding my hand
It's not a hand you can see
But on the road to the promised land
This hand will shepherd me
Through delight and despair
Holding tight and always there

Grateful, grateful
Truly grateful I am
Grateful, grateful
Truly blessed
And duly grateful

It's not that I don't want a lot
Or hope for more, or dream of more
But giving thanks for what I've got
Makes me so much happier than keeping score

In a world that can bring pain
I will still take each chance
For I believe that whatever the terrain
Our feet can learn to dance
Whatever stone life may sling
We can moan or we can sing

Grateful, grateful
Truly grateful I am
Grateful, grateful

Truly blessed
And duly grateful

I am listening to this over and over again these days. Even in these perilous times, I have much to be grateful for--and this song is one of them, reminding me of all the others.

@MarthaKite

Stunning. Such an incredible song - and on this Thanksgiving Eve in the US, utterly expresses how I feel in my life. "I've got a family of friends..." *perfect*. Thank you.

I also first heard this powerful and lovely song on WBAI in New York just two years ago. David Kenny has played it every year between Thanksgiving and New Years for quite some time.  I was absolutely captivated by it when I heard the first version, which I believe was a studio demo. It has since been recorded by many artists. The message is so profound that it has lead me to other compositions by Mr. Bucchino.  Among other things I'm truly grateful for his amazing talent.

@Rememberthenradio

Art Garfunkel also does a beautiful job when he sings it.

David Kenny is wonderful! I've been introduced to so much through his radio show, this song definitly

WOW!!! That's all I can say. This is what we need to teach our children

First time hearing this just today & have fallen in love with it. It's tough to hear as I lost my wonderful wife to sarcoidosis just a couple months ago. It's difficult but do-able in counting God's blessings in all of this. My son & I know where she is today (in the presence of Jesus) & for that, we are indeed what Mr. Feinstein sings,....."Grateful." Pray for me please, there's a lot of rough "first times' ahead as we move to the end of the year.

David, my love & prayers are with you & your son while you navigate this painful time. Please know there are many souls embracing you now & always. Take care.♥️🙏🏽

Beautiful performance. Brian Stokes Mitchell does an incredible performance of this great song with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. LOVE THIS SONG!

@ericburns9132

It's a great song and I love all the versions of it. But in my opinion the best version of Grateful in my opinion was by Art Garfunkel, who was actually the first person to perform and record this song. He recorded it for his live album Across America, and recorded it again when Grateful was turned into a Children's book, and they made a CD where John played the piano and Art sang it and both versions are spectacular, Grateful was made for Art Garfunkel's voice in my opinion. And I love all the other versions of Grateful, I love Michael Feinstein's version, Amanda McBroom's version, David Campbell's version and many more versions, but I love Art Garfunkel's version the best.
