Nobody but you
Michael Feinstein Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nobody will do
I have seen them all
But didn't fall until I saw you
Who's locked in my heart?
Who's my little yum yum?
How'd he tell me who?
Who's locked in my heart?
Who's my little yum yum?
How'd he tell me who?
You know, it's no but you, but you
In Michael Feinstein's song "Nobody But You," the lyrics describe a deep desire for someone special. The opening lines set the tone, with an emphasis on how the singer has seen and encountered many people, yet was not moved until they met this individual. The word choice of "fall" implies the kind of attraction which accompanies an intense emotional pull. The refrain, "Nobody but you, nobody will do," then reinforces this idea that there is no other person who could match up to this individual's standards. The lyrics then repeat the question, "Who's locked in my heart?" which hammers home the idea that this person is deeply engrained in the individual's emotions. The use of the phrase "little yum yum" is a playful and affectionate way to refer to this person the singer is so drawn to. Overall, the lyrics of "Nobody But You" paint a picture of someone who has truly found the one they have been looking for and who they want to be with for the long haul.

I appreciate that he always sings those introductions that are often ignored by other singers. Same with his Cole Porter songs.

I agree with you . This is one of the best known and loved romantic ballads in American music and that beginning verse is so very much part of the song. Another Gershwin ballad that most vocalist inappropriately shorten was written for the musical “An American in Paris”. Micheal refers to this later, “Our Love is Here to Stay”. Ira put his heart into that one as he had to write the lyrics after his beloved brother died. George already wrote the melody. One of Irving Berlin’s song that most singers don’t sing the intro is in “God Bless America”. Check out the Kate Smith version when it was done in the movie “This is the Army”. I did find one YouTube piano piece where the pianist included that part. Some much beauty in the work if these magnificently talented men nothing should ever be left out.

Have seen Michael twice in Ann Arbor, MI. He never ceases to impress me with his total professionalism, unique talent, and Joe Good-Guy likable personality. His eyes are incredibly blue, his grooming fastidious. Someday when I'm visiting NYC, I'll get to see Michael in person in his Loews night club. And, since he always does Gerschwin, my favorite composer, could anything be better.
