Soon
Michael Feinstein Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know there's someone somewhere
Someone who's sure to find me soon
After the rain goes there are rainbows
I'll find my rainbow soon
Soon it won't be just pretend
Soon a happy ending
Love, can you hear me
If you're near me
Sing your song

Sure and strong
And soon

Overall Meaning

In Michael Feinstein's song Soon, the lyrics are full of hope, faith and optimism. The first line "I know there's someone somewhere, someone who's sure to find me soon" suggests that the singer has hope for finding love in the future. He is confident that he will find the right person eventually. This is followed by the line "After the rain goes there are rainbows, I'll find my rainbow soon". Here, the singer acknowledges that there may have been difficult times in his life, but he is optimistic that the future holds something brighter for him.

The chorus of the song is particularly meaningful. It says, "Soon it won't be just pretend, soon a happy ending". This line shows that the singer is tired of just imagining a happy ending and is ready for it to become a reality. He is hoping that his dream of finding love will come true soon. The final lines of the chorus are "Love, can you hear me? If you're near me, sing your song. Sure and strong. And soon." Here, the singer is calling out to love, asking it to come to him. He believes that if love is near him, then it will sing a strong and sure song and come to him soon.

Got time?
Some March weekday in 1987, Johnny Carson featured Mr. Feinstein on 'The Tonight Show'. Knew nothing about the young man. Personable and modest, he performed a Gershwin tune (two perhaps?) at the piano in such an unaffected manner that it made me recall singers from my father´s 78 r.p.m. collection. So revealing and authentic that it left quite an impression (not that much different from the impression I got in 1971 from watching Elton John for the first time also on the Tonight Show, singing 'Your Song' under a spotlight).
But I digress.
On Friday afternon that same week, two friends and I had the notion to travel from L.A. and spend the weekend in San Francisco.
On the plane, in my seat was a discarded Bay City newspaper from an earlier flight. Within its pages, I was suprised to come across an advertisement of Mr. Feinstein performing that same night at 'The Plush Room' S.F. night club. Serendipity becons, I thought.
Alas, the newspaper ad did not provide the address of the joint (so thoughtless to assume that readers around town all knew of its location).
My enthusiasm was such that persuading my friends to join me was easy. Having arrived at our hotel on Sutter Street in the early evening, took it upon myself to make reservations. But could find NO ONE to tell me the night club's address.
The yellow pages, the front desk and tourist brochures in the hotel room were no help! Neither did a taxi driver I asked. Time - was - running - out!
Eight o'clock was upon us and was about to give up the search.
Dialed Information and got little help until the young lady perceived my eagerness, so that she excused herself to ask her fellow operators. She came back on the line after a 30-second eternity and gave me the phone number (you'd think I would have bothered to ask for the address).
I thanked her as profusely as was possible but worried that there would be no time to make the show. This was about 8.15 already. Called to ask about the address and show-time: 9 p.m., I was told. I stared at the data before me: I recognized it and was stunned to grasp that 'The Plush Room' was right-ACROSS-THE-STREET from ours, not a separate club but located within The York (?) hotel, rather - which would explain the complication.
Told my friends to meet me at 9 and rushed out (I think I jay-walked) to get the best seats, which was no problem as I was the first patron there.
Michael Feinstein gave a memorable show, by himself at the piano. Part of his appeal is the sense of familiarity about the audience and his surroundings, making all of those in the room feel that he sings to each.
I still remember his recollections of his friendship with and working as Ira Gershwin's amanuensis or the background to Broadway tunes or each song by Irving Berlin, et al. How it was that Ira worked out playful nuances in his lyrics as when the lines
"Although I may not be the man /
some girls think of as handsome"
from 'Someone to Watch Over Me' would not rhyme unless delivered:
"Although I may not be the manSOME /
girls think of as handSOME".
The performance came to a successful end but could not leave the premises without paying my respects. The artist consented to my brief visit, during which I acknowledged his undertaking to recover the sophisticated simplicity of the great wordsmiths and composers of the yesterday. Made sure to state that my father (b. 1902) would have been thrilled to hear his impeccable renditions.
On the way out with my buddies, we purchased the 'Live at the Algonquin' and 'Pure Gershwin' LPs.
On three visits to N.Y. since, have not coincided with Mr. Feinstein performing at his nightclub. My loss. But it will happen.
I understand that The York closed its doors a few years back.

One of the most beautiful songs written by Barry Manilow for the Don Bluth animated film of "Thumbelina".

Thank you I wondered who wrote this song as it’s the same title but not the one written by George Gershwin.

I heard Michael Feinstein sing for the first time on the show Herman's Head. I immediately bought every cd of his that I could find. You can hear the beauty & passion in his voice. People who haven't had the pleasure of his voice are really missing out on something beautiful. D
