His project Spearhead produced the critically acclaimed Home in 1994. The album contained his biggest single, "Hole in the Bucket," a thoughtful lament on the plight of the homeless, and "Positive," which addressed the growing AIDS epidemic. The album boasted adept funk samplings, sinuous guitar vamps, and soulful, melodic tracks about family and social injustice. 1997's Chocolate Supa Highway was not as pop-friendly as Home, but neither did its themes of kidnappings and police brutality lend themselves to such overt accessibility. Its mixture of harsher musical styles -- techno, rock, and funk -- was a step forward for Franti as his world view broadened and deepened. In 2001, Franti released Stay Human. In it he expresses his anger at the system, his advocacy of love, and his belief in freedom through individuality and self-expression through a set of songs that revolve around a fictitious death penalty case. In it, his embrace of the genres that inspired him is achieved with eloquence.
Earlier projects of Franti include The Beatnigs and The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, which had more of an experimental/industrial sound, but addressed many of the same social/political issues.
As a celebration of the Election of Barack Obama Franti recorded the Obama Song, offered as a free track on downloaded at their offical website, www.michaelfranti.com/.

'Cause I want you to know what I'm talking about
I've been your solo lover now for quite a while
You've been my heaven sent angel and you make me smile
I know I'm complicated like a spray painted maze
But I hope we can learn to whether or to stay
Please, don't go breaking my heart
I only have one, I only have one
Don't go breaking
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones
Plug your headphones, baby, into my sound
I know I'm not always easiest to be around
But I try and I try to keep up with your beat
You turn my drum machine on, the way you move your hip
You make me feel alright in the middle of the night
When I'm tossing and turning, you're holding me tight
I'm singing
Please, don't go breaking my heart
I only have one, I only have one
Don't go breaking
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
So plug your headphones, baby, into my heart
'Cause I want you to know what I've been talking about
You've been my heaven sent angel, now for quite a while
Make me laugh, make me cry and you been making me smile
I'm singing
Please, don't go breaking my heart
I only have one, I only have one, one, one
Don't go breaking
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
Plug your headphones straight into my heart
My heart is a loving heart
My heart is a loving heart
My heart is a loving heart
My heart is a loving heart
In Michael Franti & Spearhead's song "Headphones," the singer is addressing their lover, asking them to plug their headphones into their heart. This connection symbolizes a deeper emotional connection and understanding between the two individuals. The singer admits to being complicated, comparing themselves to a "spray-painted maze," but hopes that their love can "whither or to stay." Despite the complications, the singer values their relationship and does not want their heart to be broken, pleading for their lover not to break it as they only have one.
The repetition of the phrase "plug your headphones straight into my heart" emphasizes the desire for a deeper connection between the two individuals. The use of music and headphones also suggests that the singer sees their relationship as a harmonious collaboration, with their lover contributing to their "beat" and "drum machine." The line "you make me feel alright in the middle of the night/ when I'm tossing and turning, you're holding me tight" further emphasizes the idea of a supportive and comforting partnership.
Overall, "Headphones" is a love song that highlights the desire for emotional connection, understanding, and support between two individuals.
