It's super interesting too. He started by making percussion with his mouth, recreated it with instruments and before making up the text he just mumbled over the song to think of a melody. At least seemingly he did it like that, with other songs you can hear the mumbling too. It was probably sometimes like this sometimes like this

This alone proves he was a musical genius naturally that didn't even need to read music to produce records. Haters will always discredit him but we (his fans) will always defend his natural born genius. Not everybody has that to their credit.

They lavishly and obviously refined the ideas presented. Kind of an extension of what happened at Motown back in the days.
It's true much of his genius was envisioning tunes and melodies (beat it demo shows this incredibly)
But he also clearly needed the a- list performers like TOTO to refine it
