Billie Jean
Michael Jackson猀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene
I said don't mind, but what do you mean, I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
She said I am the one, who will dance on the floor in the round

She told me her name was Billie Jean, as she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
And mother always told me be careful of who you love
And be careful of what you do 'cause the lie becomes the truth

Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

For forty days and forty nights
The law was on her side
But who can stand when she's in demand
Her schemes and plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice
(Don't think twice, don't think twice)

She told my baby we'd danced till three, then she looked at me
Then showed a photo my baby cried his eyes were like mine (oh, no)
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round, baby

People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
She came and stood right by me
Just the smell of sweet perfume
This happened much too soon
She called me to her room

Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

She says I am the one
You know what you did, (she says he is my son) breaking my heart babe
She says I am the one

Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover (don't Billie Jean)

Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover

Overall Meaning

"Billie Jean" is one of Michael Jackson's most famous songs, which tells the story of an obsessive fan who claims that MJ is the father of her child. The lyrics portray a situation where the singer, Jackson himself, is accused of fathering a child by a woman named Billie Jean. The song starts with Jackson describing the woman as a "beauty queen from a movie scene" and "dancing on the floor in the round." She claims that Jackson is the father of her son, which causes him to deny the claim and state that Billie Jean is not his lover. He further explains how people always advised him to be careful of what he does and to be mindful of the people he loves.

Despite the woman's persistence in claiming Jackson is the father, he maintains that the kid is not his son. The lyrics continue with Jackson describing his own frustration and the stress put on him as the woman continuously pursues him with these claims. Towards the end of the song, Jackson pleads with the audience to always think twice and take his strong advice, in order to avoid being caught in a similar situation.

The song's lyrics are inspired by Jackson's own personal experiences with obsessive fans who make outrageous claims about him. Jackson's manager once received a threatening letter, urging him to pay Joelie Johnson $10m, who claimed he stole her songs. Jackson met a woman in a hotel, who left him a note saying "Welcome to the family." Many more stories like this might have influenced "Billie Jean."

MJ was also the worlds greatest mumble rapper

Xentius

@onesong2001 interesting is subjective, so you're wrong and right, depending on the individual. If you find other things interesting, more power to you

onesong2001

@Xentius  his music is not super interesting.

Xentius

It's super interesting too. He started by making percussion with his mouth, recreated it with instruments and before making up the text he just mumbled over the song to think of a melody. At least seemingly he did it like that, with other songs you can hear the mumbling too. It was probably sometimes like this sometimes like this

onesong2001

@Joshua  Your comment reads like a Michael Jackson lyric.

I say that all the time bruh MJ really was a rapper too and don’t even realize he is literally the embodiment of music every instrument every genre he is music literally

This alone proves he was a musical genius naturally that didn't even need to read music to produce records. Haters will always discredit him but we (his fans) will always defend his natural born genius. Not everybody has that to their credit.

Blah

Indeed. All the biggest writers of all time are like that. They just hear it in their head then sing it. Why need to learn chords etc.

That's why he worked with a team of musicians, artists, writers and producers.

They lavishly and obviously refined the ideas presented. Kind of an extension of what happened at Motown back in the days.

It's true much of his genius was envisioning tunes and melodies (beat it demo shows this incredibly)
But he also clearly needed the a- list performers like TOTO to refine it

@Johnny Raven79 Simply rely on a songwriter machine, like Max Martin.
