And he is also batshit crazy. He's a billionaire who dresses up in a bat costume to beat the crap out of criminals every night. Largely due to Post Traumatic Stress.

Bruce Wayne might be a hero... But that doesn't mean he is sane.

Keaton brought the crazy. You believe he's insane enough to be Batman. No other actor sold me on how Bruce would become Batman.

Exactly what happened. He was goading Joker into a confrontation. He suspected he'd get shot, hence the plate he hides in his jacket. The gunshot and inevitable scream from Vicki would bring unwanted attention and make Joker and his goons want to leave.

@Phillip Zink I think there were more practical ways of getting unwanted attention given Joker and his goons didn't even know he was in the house until he revealed himself. Not exactly the smartest idea to rely on a small plate to keep yourself from getting killed. Joker could have just popped him in the head. Or realized that he wasn't bleeding when he shot him in the first place.

Bruce has got likely 10 seconds to think on his feet. Sure he could have easily snuck out of there and alerted the police. Joker was likely to hurt, kidnap or even kill Vicki in a moments notice. The goal is to divert Joker's attention away from her and focus his rage/anger/attention on Bruce. Most people when firing aim for the torso. Largest surface area, easier to hit. "Aim small, miss small." It was a risk, but calculated.

The best thing about Nicholson's Joker is that he appears almost normal now and then, like someone who might even listen to reason. He's not constantly doing a crazy show, but displays a touch of cool calmness now and then. In that respect he's similar to Frank Miller's Joker, and feels a lot more dangerous underneath.

That exchange is both funny and sad at the same time 😂 The way Nicholson asks the question just kills me, but the way Keaton convey's Bruce's reaction is heartbreaking because at first it seems as if he's saying "What the hell are you talking about?" but in reality he remembers that was what his parents' killer said and its touched a nerve, especially when Joker callously says "I just like the sound of it." A moment that quickly switches from amusement to sadness. Genius scriptwriting and acting, and the culmination with that line, "I made you? You made me first." 👏🏼👏🏼

I think it really illustrates the power and longevity of these characters that we can have such different interpretations of them over decades of storytelling. It feels like comics creators essentially invented the idea of a "reboot," allowing for fresh and new variations on a theme. The periodic reinvention of such well-known characters allows everybody to have their favorite version that focuses on the aspects that speak to their own personalities. Some people like the campy Batman, some like the brooding Batman, and some like the realistic Batman. The goofy Joker, the sinister Joker, the scary Joker. I think they're all great. They are our modern mythology.

Comic creators definetly didn't create the idea of "reboot". You can draw reimaginings of established mythology all throughout history. Disney practically made their brand on "reboots" of folk tales.

While I do feel bad for Robin Williams being used as bait to lure Jack Nicholson into playing the Joker, I am also glad because Nicholson gave an iconic performance in this. Jack had the perfect smile. He even did a good laugh for Joker. This is the most comic accurate Joker we've seen in live action. This Joker gives a lot of memorable lines too. And of course, Nicholson added as much of his own stuff as he could. He improvised the little dance at 3:43. That shows he was having fun with this role. Of course, if Robin Williams were indeed casted, he would have improvised a lot of stuff. Whenever Robin was in a movie, he would improvise a lot of stuff not on script like in Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Jumanji.

Tim burton made the ideal version of Batman in my mind. It is dark while still having a somewhat lighthearted tone. Not to mention his sets and aesthetics are off the charts and Gotham really feels like it is in another world. The dark knight trilogy may be better in terms of storytelling but they strip away superhero/fantasy elements and are more like police/action thrillers (though they are certainly entertaining and terrific in their own right).

The only thing I disliked was that Batman was not the central character. In the first movie, Batman didn't even appear for most of the first act. Then in the second, it was mostly about Penguin and Catwoman. I can't recall why that was. I do like that Bruce Wayne was portrayed as a damaged, awkward, sad guy who had nothing in his life except the cowl. That kind of Bruce hasn't been seen since really.

Jack has too be THE BEST Joker to date. When you look at Ledgers performance while good he was more of an anarchist. Phoenix's was about sorrow and even times of feeling bad for him and his struggles. Jack's portrayal was simply him going from being a gangster to losing his mind but enjoying the thrill of killing. While still keeping it funny yet scary at the same time. His face was constantly white because of the acid he fell into thus he had to cover it up with flesh toned make-up to look somewhat "normal". Yet even then he wasn't because of that permanent grin. So too me Jack's Joker encompassed ALL of the traits and nuances that made Joker what he was. A psychotic killer without ANY remorse. And that's ALL Jack's Joker did was live to kill and see people suffer. So that's the scariest Joker to date.

This Joker is the old hat that paved the way for the future ones. He's messed up, he's eccentric and crazy, he claims he's depressed on the inside and he's a misfit. A lost soul. It was the first version that got improved upon with Ledger's. Tim Burton was trying to stay true to the comics, but without this portrayal we wouldn't have the darker Joker including Mark Hamill! Much respect to Jack for redefining this character on film
