Kiwanuka told Mojo: ""Cold Little Heart" probably most describes where I got to after getting stuck in my own writing. Usually I write songs in my room on acoustic guitar. But working with 'Flo, I needed to try different ways to shake things up. "Cold Little Heart" was the result."

Kiwanuka's vocals only kick in after a five-minute guitar-led instrumental. He said: "I've always liked soul music from the '70s like Isaac Hayes and Funkadelic. A lot of it is really patient - 'Maggot Brain' slowly evolves, 'Walk On By' slowly builds. They're like suites, but it's hard to come up with that with just acoustic guitar. (Writing) in the studio at the same time as recording you've got keyboards, guitars, effects, electric guitars, so you can really go to town with long structures and passages."

The song is the opening track of "Love & Hate". Co-producer Danger Mouse told Mojo:

"The moment we finished "Cold Little Heart," there was no way it wasn't going to open the album. Everybody knows about Michael's voice, but he's also an amazing guitar player and songwriter. I said, 'The first song you release off this album should be an instrumental.' We didn't do that,

This is the next best thing; opening it with a song, where he doesn't sing in the first five minutes, but it's still all Michael, his melodies and his beautiful guitar playing."

A shortened version of the song soundtracks the opening credits of the 2017 HBO mini-series Big Little Lies, starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. When Kiwanuka agreed to let the series use the song, he thought it would be background music in one of the scenes; he was shocked to learn that 90 seconds of it play over the opening credits in every episode, forming the musical theme for the entire series.

The show was a hit, granting new life to the song, which got relatively little radio play because it's very long and doesn't fit a specific format. It got even better when Big Little Lies won eight Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Music Supervision. "Cold Little Heart" played every time the show won an award at the ceremony.

I shared this song with my dad before he died almost 5 years ago. He was crying at the lyrics, he was so moved by certain lines. He said it was one of the most beautiful and sorrowful songs he had heard in 30 years.

He died within 2 weeks. The last song that touched him.

I miss him.

(Thank you the responses.) He was having a heart procedure the next day, already had filled out his PoA and will. He called friends crying the night before he died, he never called me or my sisters. I think he knew he was going to die and he couldn't tell us.

I wish he would have. I have so many regrets. I'd give the world to hear him again. Feel the safety of having him hug me.

I had a similar experience with a new friend in college. We met in one of my classes and immediately started talking about everything. He was a budding young filmmaker and had just earned it apprenticeship what's Spike Lee! The last song we talked about was Jeremy by Pearl Jam. This song has gripped me and given me such bliss. I've planned my suicide twice, once in 2007 and then again in 2018. I nearly went through with each plan until something would interrupt that attempt, and I found myself losing each day, instead of living. And for the first year in twelve years, I'm in a healthy mental and emotional space. I'm a father of 11 year old twin boys, I've struggled with addiction to hard drugs and somehow beat it before I had kids. My recent huge struggle has been with tobacco. I've been smoking since I was like 16. I'm 38 now. I quit cigarettes right before Covid, just a coincidence, but I still crave tobacco when I drink, so I started smoking cigars. Y'know, the 99 cents for a pack of two White Owls. The thing is, I inhale them way more than I should. Ever since this song and video got stuck in my head, I've started having this paranoid idea that I probably have lung cancer. For the past couple months I'd wake up early early in the morning with this song in my head, a pain in my chest and a fear in my heart. A fear that one day I'll suddenly not be here for my boys. If you ever happen to read this, I want you to know that it's this song you wrote, and also this video with it, that led me to put that shit down for good. I haven't smoked for about two weeks now, except for the green. I don't think I'll ever quit that, but that's only a two-toke bedtime thing. So, thank you, man. Thank you for making this. Thank everyone involved. I don't know how one song that got stuck in my head every morning for like 2 months changed my life, but I guess that's just how it works sometimes. Everything has its place and time, and somehow you just happened to put me on my way to the next thing I want to quit. Next stop is the beer. One step at a time, man.

Can't believe I didn't found out about this song until today. Maybe 5 years too late, but I would say better late than never. I was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2020, today pain is a little rough, day was kind of gloomy. Then this song just stumble upon me, now I find myself dancing on my 2 feets, wiggling around like I actually could dance, but I know for sure though, my heart is dancing.
