Additionally a wealthy German state at the Iron Curtain could also finance a significant military force of up to 500.000 men in arms.

The scary - and somehow most awesome - part about Germany is that only 10 years after total annihilation, in 1955, German economy had recovered to an even stronger state than right before the war. And that was only partially due to the Marshall plan the effects of which fully unfolded as late as the sixties. As a people, we Germans, being from a generation that only heard (and learned) about the war through school and family, look at that time, and we're just...speechless. Speechless for the war and the mass murders as well as the bravery of the survivors, especially the "debris women" (Trümmerfrauen). My Dad, who as a child and juvenile had suffered severe PTS from that time, would always repeat that it was not only a historically correct and justified move by the allies not to punish the country again. It was, in the long run, the only possible move in sight of the upcoming cold war because no one wanted Stalin at the Rhine. Anyways, we conquered the world again, this time with German engineering, BMWs, Mercedes Benz, soccer and, oh yeah, Rammstein. What an irony...

WW1 was way much closer for Germany to win in september 1914 - disturbingly closer.

Holding Stalingrad would have complicated Russian supply lines because Stalingrad was an important hub for the Russian railway, which would have eased the pressure on the eastern front. That would have allowed the Germans to dedicate more to the western front, which would have forced America to commit harder in Europe and conversely eased pressure on Japan. If all that happened it really might have been the Axis powers that won.

During the second for the easterb countries is was a battle for survival, litteraly (externination camps and everything) so they wouldn’t have stopped fighting. The soviets legitemized the losses under the not one step back policy ubder this. They also moced theor factories further east.
This meant that the east front never would’ve fully ended. It would most likely have resulted in a race for the atomic bombs abd building them, if d-day failed that is, don’t forget: german reserves were running out.
The atom race would’ve been won by the us or uk, knowing that most german scientists fled and procuring the resources would’ve been diffucelt.
In the eyes of hitler (quote finally fits for once):”peace was never an option”
The germans fought to conquer and the allies to get peace.

You could say that ww1 was a setup that created the conditions for ww2. Hitler fought in ww1 and became a corporal. A bomb killed a lot of his fellow soldiers once and Hitler was unharmed. He looked at this event as divine intervention that he was spared and that his life had a bigger purpose.

He despised the Treaty of Versailles and that motivated him to get revenge on France and the Allied powers. He had them sign their surrender documents in the same train car that the Treaty of Versailles was signed. This was one of his most satisfying victories of the war. But then he had to fight a War on two fronts and that was not going to work out.

Norm is the US's Tommy Cooper. Brought us nothing but laughs until the last page, never wanting to turn the plot onto his illness. It is possible, however improbable he didn't know about it until the end.

But he's from a different age, where we carried on and didn't want to worry people over things. Kind of like Peter Jennings, from "World News Tonight" on ABC. He was a very long running newscaster, and one night his sign off message was that it was his last show, he had throat cancer, and thanked for the time spent. He would die 4 months later.

Actually, it was the severe economic conditions from the Versailles Treaty after WW1 (thanks Dulles brothers), that created the poverty and desperation that led to the creation of the NSDAP resulting in WW2. So, the allies were really the root cause. After WW2, the Marshall Plan supported the rebuilding of a democratic Germany, which led them to the economic prosperity they now enjoy.

It’s still an unbelievable achievement. Building up a country from the scratch. Yes the Marshall Plan helped, but the generation of my grandparents worked unbelievable hard. Cities, streets, industry, machines everything had to be build again. Our current generation wouldn’t get that done, not in 100 years. I have a lot of respect for that generation.

Even if you give their military campaigns the most optimistic outcomes, the home front was months away from breaking and without achieving a complete knockout blow against the entire Entente, things would get worse and Germany would join the other central powers on the pile of "Empires that completely dissolved"

@@billygoat5302 but yes. A war between Germany and Poland is not a 'world war'. What made it a world war was Britain and France attacking Germany and dragging their respective colonial empires along into the fight.

@@mrplease66 So now you're specifically talking about WWII? The one in which the guy running Germany actually had a "Take Over the Entire World" plan? And that's not Germany going to war with the world? Okay...
I mean, I guess you could be right on some level. The rest of the world did technically initiate the war by not peacefully letting the German soldiers round up and murder every person who didn't have blond hair and blue eyes.

​@@billygoat5302 I think you're a little less conversant with the topic than you'd need to be in order to have this conversation. But fine, I'll oblige you. The guy running Germany had no 'take over the enire world' plan. What he had was the plan to anull the Treaty of Versailles and re-establish the boders of 1914. Additionally, and not unlike the US, France and the UK, he had a plan to wipe out communism, thus Operation Barbarossa. That second plan was not entirely obvious to the Western powers, however, as Hitler had chosen to buy time by signing a treaty of non-aggression with Stalin. This led Churchill to believe that the Soviets and the Nazis were about to engage in an alliance of their own - which of course they had not - thus begging and pleading with the US to join on England's side. The US, for their part, had no real intention of going to war with Germany, even after France had fallen and the Germans had spent the best part of two years sinking American ships in the Atlantic with their U-boats. Once the Germans invaded the USSR many in the US Senate felt that Germany was actually doing them a favour and even considered helping Germany. EVEN after Pearl Harbour in Dec. 1941 the US did not declare on Germany, eventually leading Hitler to declare war on the USA instead. Basically, it had made zero sense to Hitler that the Western powers did not want to join him in the war against Communism. Some even believe that Rudolph Hess' flight was on Hitler's orders, dispatched to try and convince Churchill to join Germany against the Soviets, and this was also the reason why he was never released from prison until his death (elimination?) in 1987. Maybe you watched a few too many American war movies but I guess you can see that it ain't quite as simple as you thought. The point being, that war needn't have happened as it did if Churchill had done what Halifax and most people in his cabinet had expected him to do: make peace.
